Bodegas Beronia Gran Reserva 2005

Member Review by EMark:

Inky dark plum color. Somewhat volatile nose. Very smooth initial mouth sensation. Not a lot of fruit--some hint of blackberry, somewhat tart, very subdued tannin. This definitely a food wine. I think I'm going to get a slice of cheese to have with this first glass. US$24.99 at WIne Club in Santa Ana.

Vanilla and cocoa influence by oak. Plum, black fruit, hints of red and some blue fruit on the nose. Also a roasted meat note. Flavors of plum and sweet spice. Nice structure with flavors of mature fruit and chocolate. Long and persistent. On the back, hints of salty charcuterie. Dry wine. Nice. 91 pts.

Pale-rimmed ruby-red. Pungent aromas of dried cherry, spicecake and vanilla, with smoke and cigarbox overtones. Sweet, palate-coating cherry and cassis flavors are braced by gentle acidity and become spicier with air. Mocha and smoke note linger on a long, supple and gently tannic finish with very good energy.

This wine is absolutely what fans of traditional Rioja should be on the lookout for. It’s smooth, elegant and complex on the bouquet, the perfect introduction to a firm yet classy palate, with berry, plum, spice, tobacco and vanilla flavors. Dry, toasty and just right on the finish. Drink now–2020.

Saturated with black fruit this wine has a gentle maturity and sweetness. Fresh scents of piquillo peppers keep it tight and tuned to Logroqos tapas bars. Wine & Spirits.

Still fresh and bright, this juicy red offers cherry, berry, chocolate and licorice flavors. The tannins are light but firm, the acidity has an orange peel note, and the finish is sweet and clean. Drink now through 2015.
