Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

The 2008 Alto Moncayo Moncayo is a big, beautiful, full-bodied wine that evolves to its peak over 3 hours. The nose opens to intense aromas of blackberry and plum, with pepper and spice in the mix. The palate is strongly fruit forward at launch, with dense blackberry and plum creating a thick, sweet fruit paste in the center of the tongue, held in check and focused nicely in a full-bodied palate with strong tannins providing a framework for evolution. Notes of herbal flavors linger at the back, while pepper and spice add heat on the top, and a metallic coating seeps toward the front, making this a wine heavy and full but also varied and long. The lengthy finish maintains interest as vanilla, oak, tobacco and cocoa dance fleetingly through the thick array of flavors. The lively spice on the top saves this wine from becoming syrupy and lifts it from its heaviness to a cleaner, brighter finish than seems likely at first pouring. A pleasant, robust acidity helps both fruit and spice evolve over an hour and beyond, evoking balance, integration and harmony from a rough start. Between two and three hours, the big fruit subsides and moves to the background while herbal flavors elevate and dominate the finish, leaving a slightly astringent aftertaste. But for the pepper and spice on the top, the wine might become thin, but does not. At four hours and beyond, the herbaceous backend recedes and grapefruit becomes the dominant fruit, melding with continuingly strong acidity to render a pleasantly sour citric center.

This plush, dense red shows coffee and spicy oak, with berry and wild plum fruit and accents of licorice and black pepper. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, and this finishes warm and spicy. Modern and alluring. Drink now through 2012. 600 cases made.`-Wine Spectator 92 Points`Deep ruby with a bright rim. Impressively complex, seductive bouquet of dark berry preserves, tobacco, graphite and smoky Indian spices. Pliant black raspberry and candied cherry flavors are enlivened by zesty minerals and firmed by fine-grained tannins. An exotic floral pastille quality emerges with air and carries into the finish, which is strikingly sweet, lively and persistent. I can't believe that this wine bears the touch of the same guy who is partially responsible for inflicting Australia's R wines on us.`-Josh Reynolds Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 93 Points

This 100% Garnacha (Grenache) from the up-and-coming hot, dry region of Campo de Borja offers a screaming 15.5% alcohol content but is remarkably self-contained, considering it is practically port-strength. The aromatics are almost scary: wood smoke, Mediterranean wild herbs, farmyard animal and garrigue... The fruit is intense and gripping, held together with a tight, bright acidity and impressive length, exuding barbecued or grilled meats, cloves and crushed black peppercorn. Stunning, and not for the faint of heart. 15.5% abv, 95 points. As of July 2008, this wine is not yet on the market, it's from a pre-release tasting.

I tend to drink Alto Moncayo during its first 5–6 years of life. Although I was sure they had aging potential, I did not realize just how much longevity these wines possess. They are generally full-bodied, powerful (with at least 15.5% natural alcohol), concentrated, rich wines made from very old vines and tiny yields. If you are not into flavor concentration or care about artisanal wines from great terroirs that have been ignored for centuries, this may not be the wine for you. Not one of these ten vintages was close to full maturity. The two most recent vintages, 2010 and 2011, were both late, cooler years and both have turned out to be sexy wines. I suspect that in many ways, 2011 will behave like 2006, being precocious and delicious, but not as long-lived as some of its siblings. These wines appear to have 20–30 years of aging potential, although the sweet spot for drinking them appears to be between age 8 and 15.

Vivid ruby. High-pitched red berry and floral scents are complemented by notes of mocha, vanilla and licorice pastille. Sweet and seamless but surprisingly lively, offering intense black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors and a hint of clove. The floral quality gains strength with air and carries through a long, youthfully tannic finish.

This rich red delivers expressive flavors of blackberry boysenberry and espresso with a thick texture enlivened by balsamic acidity. Drink now through 2020.

Inky ruby. Expansive smoke-accented aromas of blackberry and blueberry compote cola and vanilla bean. Lush and creamy in texture with palate-staining dark fruit compote flavors complicated by suave oak spices. The smoky quality comes back on the the powerful very long subtly tannic finish. Shows a lot of intense fruit and seems surprisingly approachable now. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Remarkably the 2011 Veraton is just as strong with an even higher alcohol content of 15.5%. A fabulous nose of spring flowers ground pepper blackberries and black cherry liqueur is followed by a full-bodied super-intense wine made from incredibly low yields and aged 17 months in a combination of French and American oak before being bottled unfiltered. This superb wine easily competes with wines priced two to three times higher. It too should drink well for a decade. - Robert Parker Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

This polished red shows graceful power. The black cherry and raspberry flavors are deepened by smoke and mineral notes, framed by firm, well-integrated tannins and kept lively by crisp acidity. Shows impressive harmony and focus. Drink now through 2018. 1,000 cases made. -TM ** SOLD OUT **

Winemaker's Notes:

94 points Rhone Report: ...rocking aromatics of smoked blackberries, campfire, meat juice, graphite, and chocolate to go with a full-bodied, seamless, and beautifully pure and polished palate. This 100% Garnacha has no hard edges, a light, weightless texture, ripe tannin, and a long, hedonistic finish.
