Bodega Renacer 'Reserva' Punto Final Malbec 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Opaque black-purple but with a touch of coffee on the rim. Funny this also smells of coffee, creamy coffee and alcoholic, a bit like Irish coffee with notes of spicy wood tones, raw wood, vanilla and a top note of talc. The typical sweet entry is followed by bitter tannins. This is very extracted with a deep core of blackberry fruit that has no finish as the bitter tannins re-emerge. This would be tough to drink more than a taste of. 80pts

Quite a variety of sensory pleasures here, from the lilac note in the bouquet to the tart, juicy center of the flavor and the blueberry jam in the finish. Not a heavyweight, but more than worth the price. (AV 88, http://argovino.com/?p=928)

A uniquely herbal bouquet for a malbec, followed by juicy plums and cherries; the high alcohol content (14.5%) is immediately noticeable but burns off eventually, leaving a reasonably long finish. (AV 86, http://argovino.com/?p=418)

Delicious, smooth Malbec. Give this a try if you're not a big fan of heavier and spicier Malbecs.

I really enjoyed this Malbec. It has a very nice nose, with dark fruit flavors and a smooth finish. Not harsh at all and very creamy, not overly complex.

Persistent aromas of red and black fruit, with notes of spice and chocolate. Mouth: Structured, robust and oily, with smooth well-integrated tannins, and a long elegant finish. Pairing: Red meat, game meat, complex dishes garnished with flavorful sauces, medium intensity cheeses, and chocolate desserts.

The Bodegas Renacer is a new winery in Mendoza, Argentina, an ultra-modern facility was built in 2004. The wine is very new in how its made but the grapes come from vines that are very old. Two vineyards are sourced for this Reserva, each with 50 year old vines yielding barely 2 tons per acre. Grapes are subjected to a double triage and then fermented in stainless steel under the supervision of famed enologist Alberto Antonini. The wine is aged 10 months in French oak barrels and bottled without filtration. This 2011 scored 90 points in the Wine Spectator adn 92 in Wine Enthusiast Magazine who said "With its reliance on old-vines vineyards, Renacer often comes out with great wines. This is one of them. Smoky, leathery berry aromas are inviting, while the mouthfeel is silky and plush. Oaky flavors of chocolate, smoked meat and vanilla accent ripe berry flavors, then clove and baking spices pour onto the finish."

Talk about super concentrated; this is thick but balanced, with tannic grip and dark, baked flavors of berry and chocolate. Bulky on the finish, with peppery spice, vanilla and a touch of heat."

Ripe yet rustic, leading with undertones of game, spice box and underbrush to the roasted plum and kirsch notes, with a rich, cedary finish. Drink now through 2016.

Saturated ruby-red. Deep, smoky aromas of meat and espresso; rather syrah-like. Lush and creamy on entry, then full and slightly saline in the mouth, a step up in thickness of texture from the 2007 regular bottling. For all its sweetness and fullness, this boasts lovely verve and definition. Finishes with sauver tannins and very good lift. The crop level here, from 50+-year-old vines, was reportedly just 23 hectoliters per hectare. (A second bottle, which I rated a point lower, was less meaty but more aromatic on the nose, showing gingerbread and floral lift.)
