Bodega Pardevalles Vino de la Tierra de León Gamonal 2005

Member Review by tommyvino:

Prieto Picudo is native to Spain and a varietal that was historically used to make lots of rose and poor bulk wines. It is sometimes blended with Mencia and or Tempranillo. The grape is very small with thin skin which has made it prone to rot, frost, and mildew. Pardevalles was the first winery to trellis their Prieto Picudo vines which has increased the aeration of the bunches and reducing the previous problems. Their vines are now over 20 years old and this wine ages for 6 months in older French oak. The color is deep cherry red with beautiful aromas of bing cherry, allspice, black raspberry, and chocolate covered strawberries. The wine is dry, medium heavy body, lively acidity, medium astringent tannins, and a long juicy finish. On the palate black cherry, black plum and raspberry come together. This is a unique Spanish red that wine geeks should love and casual drinkers will at least appreciate. Then again just try it and decide for yourself. 4/5
