The 2005 Mestizaje is composed of 70% Bobal with the balance equal parts Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit comes from vines planted on chalk and limestone at high altitude in the Terrerazo zone of Utiel-Requena. Malolactic fermentation occurred in used French oak where the wine remained for an additional 6 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Purple in color, the wine offers aromas of pain grille, damp earth, vanilla, black cherry, and black currant. Thick and chewy on the palate, the wine has excellent depth and concentration leading to a tannic finish. If the tannins become better integrated over the next 2-3 years, my score will appear conservative.
Given the proficiency (or lack thereof) of Americans with foreign languages, I can't imagine how the name of this wine gets butchered. In any event, the 2003 Mestizaje is a fine effort made primarily from the indigenous Bobal grape, with Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Garnacha included in the blend. It spent one year in old French oak, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Herbaceous, earthy, funky characteristics jump from the glass of this kinky wine. While it is not for everyone, it offers opaque ruby/purple color, medium body and loads of fruit, but it is unquestionably "avant garde" in its aromas and flavors. I found its weirdness to be a turn-on. It should age well 3-4 years.
The 2007 Mestizaje is a blend of 70% Bobal, with the balance Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It was barrel-fermented and raised in oak for 6 months prior to bottling without fining or filtration. Opaque purple-colored, it offers up an alluring perfume of cedar, tobacco, black raspberry, black cherry, and violets. This is followed by a smooth-textured, layered, savory wine with lots of spice, chocolate-covered cherry and black fruit flavors. It will develop for another 2-3 years but can be enjoyed now.
Inky purple. Smoky dark berries and cherry on the nose, with complicating notes of dark chocolate and black tea. Serious, brooding dark fruit flavors are braced by dusty minerals and framed by chewy tannins. I admire this wine's power and depth but it'll need a hunk of fatty red meat to tame it. Fans of densely packed, masculine wines may rate it higher.
Impress your friends at parties once you've learned how to properly pronounce this wine! Astonish them with your wine savvy once they've tasted it! Comprised primarily of Bobal (an indigenous grape of Spain) and a blend of Bordeaux and Rhône varietals, it somehow ends up tasting like a $50 Pauillac. Old World tannins create the framework for complex notes of black cherries, saddle leather, cigar box and graphite. The little bit of funky earth on the nose is no doubt attributable to the Grenache, and adds yet another dimension to this remarkable wine.
A true crossbreed (mestizaje), this bobal-based blend also includes tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot and garnacha, all melding together to form a dense and firm red. Its plum and black cherry aromas emerge from a nucleus of compact and youthful tannins, needing time to develop its complexity, or decanting for braised beef.
