Bodega Colomé Torrontés Calchaquí Valley 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

90+ points Luis Gutierrez (Wine Advocate): The 2016 Torrontés is sourced from 50-year-old parral vineyards that yielded 10,000 kilos per hectare from vines planted at 1,700 and 2,300 meters altitude. Some 10% of the grapes were harvested early to provide freshness. It fermented slowly with neutral bayanus yeasts for some 35 days and lots of fine lees and was bottled without malolactic in the month of June. This is perfumed and lightly floral with the Torrontés notes making an appearance in the palate, which fills the mid palate and leaves that sensation of Moscatel pulp. This has the intensity of older vines and slightly longer fermentation and combines power with great freshness. The acidity seems to compensate the faint bitterness inherent to the grape. In general, they are harvesting the white grapes earlier than before, a general tendency they also started to apply to the reds in search of more freshness. This is the best young Torrontés I've had from Colomé. Kudos to winemaker Thibaud Delmotte and his team! Drink: 2016-2018. (Dec 2016)

Colome was farmed for thousand of years by the native population who were excellent stewards of the land. The original Indio language in Ihe Cakhaqul Valley was "Kakan"; but at the end of the 15th century the Incas entered the valley. Since then, the dialect spoken in the valley has been "Quechua". Colome was farmed for thousand of years by the native population who were excellent stewards of the land. The original Indio language in Ihe Cakhaqul Valley was "Kakan"; but at the end of the 15th century the Incas entered the valley. Since then, the dialect spoken in the valley has been "Quechua". In 1549, Calchaqui Valley was first occupied by the Spanish conquistadores but they encountered stiff resistance from the native population. 90 years later the Spanish succeeded expropriating the native population. As the tale goes, the native tribe chief Colomln received vines from the Spanish conquistadores in the late 16th century for good services rendered. The old Colomi winery was founded in 1831. probably by the Spanish Governor of Salta, Nicolas Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar. His daughter Ascencion, who married Jose Benjamin Davalos, introduced in 1854 from France pre-phylloxera Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon wines to Colome. Three vineyards of 10 acres/ 4 hectares, dating from this time still produce grapes. Colome is considered the oldest existing winery in Argentina. Read less
