Food Pairings for Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Alamos
Of the five or six ($10-20) Malbecs I have tasted thus far, the 2008 Catena is my favorite. This wine has a beet-red glow and a dark berry aroma with floral overtones. Gary Vaynerchuck of Wine Library TV described this wine as sweet, but I disagree. For me, this Malbec displays a strong presence of dark fruit, tobacco, and leather concentrated mostly in the back of the palate (with little, if any, of the mid-palate fructose flavor prominent in many Zinfandels). The flavor is smooth and mellow with a lingering finish of cracked pepper, tannins, and minerals that will leave you puckering pleasantly and craving the next sip.

The '08 Catena is back on track. Lots of mocha, dark fruits especially blackberry and smooth through the finish. This is a great tasting wine with a price to match.
This wine is thoroughly enjoyable. With a great blend of fruit and spice, it offers something for everyone, especially given its low price. Good with strongly flavored foods suck as Mexican, roast meets, and strong meaty Italian dishes.
Very nice wine. Sweet fruit taste. Really enjoyable wine.
very average and underwhelming. I would not recommend it.

The 2008 Malbec (priced just over the limit to qualify for the Value report), dark ruby red in color, it delivers an alluring bouquet of Asian spices, incense, lavender, and black cherry. Smooth textured, spicy, and easy-to understand, this pleasure-... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Malbec wine from Mendoza in Argentina. 2008 Bodegas Catena Zapata Catena Malbec 750ml
Rich and polished, boasting lots of pure cassis, blackberry and boysenberry fruit that courses along, carried by alluring spice, integrated toast and a nice, lingering anise note. Drink now through 2011. 40,000 cases made. -JM
91 Points - Wine & Spirits"Aromas of violets and juicy raspberries power past this wines lighter scents of black pepper and cassis. Completely filled by the rich, generous fruit flavors that promise a good life in bottle."90 Points - Wine Spectator"Rich and polished, boasting lots of pure cassis, blackberry and boysenberry fruit that courses along, carried by alluring spice, integrated toast and a nice, lingering anise note. Drink now through 2011."Winemaker's notes:The 2008 Catena Malbec shows a dark violet color with deep bluish-black tones. The nose offers ripe, concentrated dark fruit aromas with delicate floral notes and traces of vanilla and mocha. The mouthfeel is rich and lush, with spices, tobacco and a touch of leather. The finish presents soft, supple tannins with bright, crisp acidity and a flinty minerality that gives the wine exceptional length.
Dunkles Rubinrot, intensiver Duft von Brombeeren, Zimt, Zedernholz und Gewürzen, saftige Fruchtdichte, feiner Holzeinsatz, konzentriert und elegant.
Rich and polished, with alluring fig, mocha, boysenberry, ganache and sweet spice notes that glide along creamy tannins and through the long, velvety finish.
Undurchdringliches Purpur.
The Catena wines are a blend of single varietal lots from the Catena family’s vineyards. Each vineyard is divided into lots that are harvested separately, and specially prepared to be part of the final blend of each Catena wine: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Chardonnay. By blending components from different terroirs and altitudes, we aim to create the most balanced and expressive wine. Although we have found that most of the Catena wines are consumed shortly after release, we have been pleased to see that they age beautifully for ten to twenty years.
