Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

What a bouquet! It’s beguiling, with endless wafts of cut flowers and ripe red fruit. The rest of the experience is not quite at the same level – an unctuous note of black cherry, but not enough depth to sustain it. Still a worthy malbec, but not up to the standard of the 2009 edition. (AV 87, http://argovino.com/?p=718)

The Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2008 shows a saturated dark violet color; the nose offers cassis, mocha and clove, along with a strong suggestion of soil tones. It combines density and sweetness on the one hand, with gripping, lightly saline flavors of tobacco, dark berries, spices and minerals; a palate-staining finish dominated by sweet black and blue fruits.

Great full bodied wine. Smooth, a hint of fruitiness, and pairs well with Italian food.

Typical of some mid-rank Argentine wines of this ilk, I find the robe very dark and inviting. The nose, however, is a bit muted for a 4 year old Cabernet of fairly exalted provenance from the Antipodes. Mostly closed with blackberry confit. Somewhat Médoc-like on entry, though without any youthful asperity - mostly bramble-berry and slightly cooked black fruit. Still, the balance is good and the smooth texture is a big plus. More old-world than new but well made and recommended. The Malbec counterpart to this wine is perhaps more interesting if more rustic...

Blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry on the nose, this full bodied, black cherry driven offering slides across the palate with balance and depth before lingering earth notes resolve into a long smooth finish. Despite its many favorable attributes this offering is a bit too straight forward for my taste and lacks the nuance of the exceptional. Straight forward wine appropriate with meat dishes, pizza and strong cheeses. 90.

Lots of fruit. Maybe plum, cassis and cherry. But nothing seems to dominate. It's just a good blend of flavors. Goes well with grilled meat. The color is a dark purple that looked more like a Syrah than a Cab.

Catena is one of the pioneers of the modern Argentine wine industry, and to this day, continues to produce some of the finest examples of their signature red, Malbec, that we see. Deep garnet color, heavy spice on the nose and bold, smooth black fruit on the palate. Always a terrific buy. Food pairing: red meats Flavor type: fruit-forward Body type: full Finish: rich

Clean and smooth, with vanilla and boysenberry defining the nose. Not a complex wine, but one made for everyday drinking; thus the plum and berry fruit is ripe and forward, while the finish is just toasty enough. Flawless even though it lacks sophistication. No high gears but still a good ride.

Plenty of char greets you, which is typical of a Catena wine; oak is always in play. The palate is ultraripe, with cherry and boysenberry fruit receiving a boost from bold acidity. With nuances of earth and pepper, but ultimately a lean body, this wine steers the course while never overreaching its limits.

Ripe, lip-smacking acidity helps keep the plum, blackberry and boysenberry fruit bouncing along, with tasty mocha and spice notes as well. Subtle toast, so the fruit really shines. A delicious forward style with textbook flavors. Drink now through 2005.

Tannic and slightly dry in the finish, this value should be drunk over the next 2 years. Aromatically displaying lively red as well as black fruits, the medium-bodied 2004 Malbec exhibits lovely breadth in its cherry-packed personality. Expressive, fresh, and satin-textured, it reveals a structured, tannin-filled finish. This excellent value should be drunk over the next 2ndash;3 years.

A wine with a dark violet color with shades of black and purple. The nose offers concentrated plum and black cherry fruit aromas. The wine has a soft, elegant mouthfeel, with rich, concentrated fruit flavors and ripe, soft-sweet tannins. Ready to drink now and over the next 2ndash;5 years.

Saturated and extracted, with an incredibly deep purple tint paving the way for manly aromas of espresso, campfire and toasted coconut. The palate, meanwhile, runs a bit sweet, with boysenberry and plum. Soft on the back end, but with enough spine to see it through. For fans of bold reds.
