drank July 2008 / a stellar Argentinian wine from a unique microclimate in Mendoza / serious deep berry flavors worthy of spicy food pairings / this was hands-down my favorite from a tasting of 60 Argentinian wines earlier this year

This is the Catena family's pride and joy. Their top of the line red wine based on the great red grapes of Bordeaux. Rich in cassis, clove, vanilla and pepper.

Wine Advocate ReviewRated 98Catena Zapatas flagship is the Nicolas Catena Zapata, a Cabernet Sauvignon-Malbec blend. The 2004 Nicolas Catena Zapata is composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Malbec. It spent 18 months in 100% new French oak. A saturated black purple in color, it has an aristocratic perfume of pain grille, mineral, espresso, saddle leather, cassis, black currant, and black raspberry. Opulently textured, complex, ripe, and sweet on the palate, it maintains a sense of elegance as well as power. It demands 10-15 years of further cellaring and should still be providing pleasure at age 50. It strikes me as being Argentinas equivalent of a great vintage of Lafite-Rothschild. When all is said and done, Catena Zapata is the Argentina winery of reference the standard of excellence for comparing all others. Drink 2018 - 2058.
Catena, one of Argentina's emerging stars, has produced this deeply hued, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon that combines rich, Napa-like fruit with mineral and spice notes. Reminiscent of the best Bordeaux reds.
This comes from another member of the extended Catena family -- Ernesto Catena, to be exact, and his wines are always pristine and elegant. This has the beautiful fruit notes, such as currant, that are typical of the best Cabernet Sauvignon, and it finishes with chocolate-driven tannins.
One of Argentina's emerging stars, Catena has produced this deep-colored, full-bodied Cabernet that combines rich Napa-like fruit with mineral and spice notes that recall the best of Bordeaux.
Aged 24 months in French Oak.
