Boasso Barolo Gabutti 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Full-bodied, with firm tannins and fresh acidity for the vintage. Attractive aromas of plums, tanned leather and flowers follow through to a full-bodied, compacted palate, with firm tannins and a finish of near-dried fruit. This should age for a very long time. A pretty tight wine. Fragrances: Spices aromatics, liquorice and fruits, black cherry Taste: Persistent, clean and sweet, solid and compact Gastronomic's Combining: Red game and meats, cheeses

Very smokey flavor and it dominates the flavor. This isn't a bad thing at all, in fact it is a very unique wine that I would recommend over and over. Went very well with a traditional Italian pasta dish.

1.5 hectares of Boasso’s Serralunga estate are planted in the Gabutti cru, long considered one of the greatest crus of the entire Barolo zone. No new oak is used on this wine.

This Serralunga d’Alba producer began to work with Marc de Grazia three years ago. From a vineyard with a southern exposure, the 1997 Barolo Gabutti reveals a dark garnet color with an amber edge. Aromas of smoke, tobacco, Provençal herbs, kirsch liqueur, and dried cherries are followed by a medium to full-bodied, dense, concentrated, powerful wine with excellent ripeness, a lush texture, and firm tannin in the finish. It gives conflicting indications of whether it will evolve quickly, or become more structured and enjoy 18 or more years of longevity. In any event, it is an excellent wine that falls just short of being outstanding. Anticipated maturity: 2003–2016.

Plenty of plum skin, berry and floral aromas in this one. Full-bodied, with firm tannins and fresh acidity for the vintage. A pretty tight wine. Best after 2004.
