Sociedade Agrícola Boas Quintas is a personal project of the oenologist Nuno Cancela de Abreu, launched in 1991 with the objective of producing estate-bottled wines from the reawakening ancient wine region of the Dão. The philosophy underlining the project was to produce wines of high quality but of essentially Portuguese character, using the traditional native grape varieties of the region. We believe that these varieties, when well adapted to local conditions of soil, climate and viticulture, represent one of our greatest assets. Vineyards We currently produce fruit from 10 hectares of vineyard in three separate plots, two in Mortágua and one in nearby Nelas. The soil is basically granitic, acidic, low in nutrients and well-drained. At an altitude of some 200 metres, and well-protected from the Atlantic coast by the mountains of Buçaco and Carramulo, the climate is cool and damp in winter, often with spring frosts. After a hot, dry summer and growing season, autumnal rains mean that the grape picking demands careful management, and it is not infrequent to divide the harvest into two distinct phases: before and after the rain. Our new plantations have a density of 3300 vines per hectare, and the selected varieties, of which 90% are red, represent the best the region has to offer. Vines are trained on a bilateral cordon system, and by restricting the number of buds to 12 per vine, together with judicious bunch removal in early summer we are able to limit the production to some 6 to 8 tonnes per hectare, equivalent to 5 to 6000 litres of juice. With 50% of our plantations represented by the imperious Touriga Nacional, we devote much time and care to this challenging variety. Through a combination of bunch selection, leaf removal and potassium fertilization we are able to advance the maturation of this normally late-ripening grape by as much as two weeks, avoiding the dangers of autumn rainfall, and giving us the ripe flavours and tannins which are crucial to our wines. In outstanding years we are able to bottle a small quantity of wine made exclusively from this magnificent variety. Sociedade Agrícola Boas Quintas has its headquarters in the attractive town of Mortágua, where the small modern winery nestles next to the magnificent family house of the Cancela de Abreus. Below the latter are the cool, dimly-lit ageing cellars. Read less
