Blue Nun is one of the most famous wines in the world, originally from the Rheinhesse region of Germany. The original wine was first produced in the early 1920s by H. Sichel Söhne, based on the beloved semi-sweet, white Riesling Liebfraumilch (Church of Our Lady) style that was produced at the cathedrals in Worms, Bingen and Mainz. His aim was to popularize German wines to a global market by introducing them to an easy-drinking, affordable product, making it one of the very first mass-produced international brands. It was called Blue Nun because the nun on the label was meant to have brown robes, and due to a printing error, it came out blue. And so it stuck. The wine was an instant success in the U.K. and eventually became popular in the US, peaking in the 1970s. Blue Nun is responsible for creating the American association with sweet German wines, and popularizing the “Rhine” jug style that is still produced. But by the close of the 1980s, tastes went more “upmarket” and the thirst for drier wines caused sales to plummet. Poor Blue Nun became the butt of many jokes, associated with “uncivilized” palates.    In the mid-1990s, Blue Nun was purchased by Langguth brands. In the 2000s, it has been relaunched with attempts to upgrade its quality associations and reinvent itself. In addition to the original Liebfraumilch style, it is also available as dry reds and whites from around the globe, such as Australian Shiraz and Chilean Chardonnay, as well as a sparkling gold release with gold leaf flakes visibly floating in the bottle.  Read less
