- 2005 Margerum Rhone Blend M5, Santa Ynez ValleySigned and numbered magnumM5 is a blend of the five principle red grapes originating from France's Rhone Valley - Syrah, Grenache, Mourvdre, Cinsault, and Counoise. M5 is composed of 55% Syrah (15% Vogelzang Vineyard, 14% Colson Canyon Vineyard, 11% Great Oak Ranch Vineyard, 7% Black Oak Vineyard, 5% Alisos Vineyard and 3% Alondra de los Prados Vineyard), 18% Grenache (5% Purisima Mountain Vineyard, 5% Crossroads Vineyard, 5% Vogelzang Vineyard and 3% Thompson Vineyard), 14% Mourvdre (6% Vogelzang Vineyard, 4% Tierra Alta Vineyard read more...and 2% Zaca Mesa Vineyard), 2% Counoise and 7% Cinsault (Both from the Stolpman Vineyard). Also included is 4% Genesis of M5 (a co-fermentation of everything but Syrah) and 2% ber Syrah (a co-fermentation of all the Syrah). Genesis of M5 and ber are co-fermentations; a practice I have found makes very complex and complete wines. I start a little natural yeast fermentation from fractions of each vineyard as the fruit arrives and I continually add to the fermentation during the harvest. I have fermentations where some grapes are on their skins for over sixty days. Genesis of M5 is an integral beginning to the final blend - a wine with lengthy flavor profiles and resolved tannins that belie its youth. I added more of my top Syrah cuvees into the blend year; the Grenache and Mourvdre were very powerful in 2005 and the Syrah, unusually, lightened up the blend. With more of the single vineyard Syrah added there is a bit of new oak in the wine. The 2005 M5 has aromas of sweet fruits, nuances of pepper, spice (posh spice) and earthy tones. It is a wine, that while approachable and food friendly, I believe will age for quite some time as it has good acidity and structure. The M5 mission statement: M5 is a wine that is from a thought - a blend that is an amalgamation of memories, both distant and recent, of wines I've tasted and loved the past thirty-three years. Oakville is famous for its big entry palate, and this wine is right on track with flavors of Damson plum, ripe Bing cherry, blackberry and dark chocolate. The other classic Oakville element is palate texture. The tannins flow with the wine and support its journey across the palate, cocoa like in consistency, providing vibrant structure without an edge or coarse note. The entire experience of this Cabernet is balanced and harmonious from entry to the finish, which endures as a warm note of vanilla and cassis. (hide)
