The D.O. Montsant is a horseshoe-shaped appellation that surrounds the D.O. Priorat on three sides. Celler Can Blau selected the village of Mas Roig as the base of operations and purchased 60 acres of vineyards with an average age of 35 years. The Cariñena is planted on sandy clay soil; Syrah on chalky soils and the Garnacha on slate.
"Sour" and volatile nose. Nice dark color. I think this is a deceptive wine. Initial palate sensation is that thie is a medium-bodied wine with olive branch flavors. As the wine moves through the mouth though, I realize that this is a quite full-bodied wine, and the annoying olive-branch flavor disappears. It doesn't burst with fruity flavor. Rather it has more neutral earthy type notes. I like it a lot and will be enjoying it with my red-sauce garnished pasta, later tonight. US$9.99 at the Wine Club in Santa Ana.
