Good cheap wine - what you would expect from a $8-9 pinot - not bad at all but predictable for the price range
It's false to call it a "pinot noir." It's a blend of that, syrah and petite sirah. Fairly strong aromas of cherry, berries and black fruits, but none of the vanilla or spice advertised on the label. The big failing here is really in the sip. The taste is tart and there is really nothing going on in the palate. I should reiterate. Nothing is going on in the palate. It comes out all fruity and juicy, hits the tongue and then just disappears! This stuff is drinkable to be sure, but it's just plain boring. At that point I'd give this a solid 3, or a 2.5 perhaps in the $9 price range. But Blackstone comes along and one-ups the lackluster sip with an offensive finish. Only seconds after the flavor of the grape dissipates, a tinny... even pewter kind of taste fills the midpalate - it's almost like I just sucked on a really dirty penny. This wine has a Smokey Oak flavor that might put some off, but I must say I was very impressed with this wine's price. What you get is a very smooth Pinot Noir with a very prominent cherry/fruit flavor. I found the Vanilla to be a bit mild but then I appreciate that. I do recommend letting it breathe a bit.
External Reviews for Blackstone Winery Pinot Noir Monterey County
Blackstone became famous producing America’s most popular Merlot. The Sonoma based winery also produces other varietals like this Winemakers Select Pinot Noir which perhaps should be America’s favorite. It shows rich, berry-laden flavors and spicy nuances that are lush and seductive. All for a price that’s been absolutely unheard of for good-drinking Pinot of this caliber. They source the grapes from Monterey, North Central Valley, The North Coast and several other regions to find the best quality and to make the most Pinot-licious blend they possibly can. A real steal and a wine you won’t want to miss.
Proper varietal character here, a decent, regional wine with some ripe fruit and a long, tart finish. Cherries, coffee and strawberries, with good acids.
Good value in a dry Pinot with real Salinas quality. Delicately structured and elegantly crisp, with silky tannins and cherry, cola and herb flavors.
Cedary, with currant, berry and earth flavors folding into tart structure. Drink now through 2006.
Earth, plum and cherry flavors have modest depth and toasty oak character. Drink now through 2005.
Ripe and juicy, medium bodied with good, rounded mouthfeel and vibrant underlying acidity. Harmonious flavors of rich, black cherry, vanilla and winter spice. Another winner from this reliable California producer.
Our California Pinot Noir has delicate black cherry, violet, and cola aromas, followed by a spicy and smoky oak in the background. This velvety wine is accented with delicious plum, raspberry and vanilla. The balance of fruit and acidity leaves a soft, lingering finish that’s perfect for salmon, grilled lamb chops, or your favorite gourmet pizza.
Brimming with cherry and raspberry fruit, the 2008 Blackstone Winemaker’s Select Pinot Noir is a classic example of a vibrant, fruit- forward Pinot Noir. Blackstone selected top vineyards from California’s finest growing regions to create a supple, delicious Pinot Noir. The grapes from cool Monterey County and Valley North contribute refined fruit flavors while the fruit from Valley South, Paso Robles, and San Benito County imparts rich, concentrated layers to the blend. The final result is a distinctive and enjoyable California Pinot Noir. The grapes were night harvested and immediately delivered to the winery to maintain acidity and maximum freshness. Subsequently, the fruit was crushed, pressed, and then fermented. The juice then underwent malolactic fermentation in French and American oak barrels to enhance the textural profile and creamy mouthfeel. Displaying a delicate nose of rose petals and red raspberries followed by layers of toasted cinnamon and spice, the 2008 Blackstone Winemaker’s Select Pinot Noir is a balanced wine, with loads of lively raspberry, plum, and vanilla flavors. This medium-bodied Pinot Noir pairs nicely with roasted chicken, grilled salmon, and light cheeses.
