Sonoma County has always been Blackstone’s home and inspiration. Since our beginning we’ve established a reputation for consistently delivering balanced, reliable wines of uncompromising quality. For nearly 20 years, we’ve cultivated close ties with grape growers and viticulturists throughout Sonoma County. Both our inspiration and our home, Sonoma remains the heart of Blackstone. You’ll find the region’s signature style blended into every bottle. As a grape-growing region, Sonoma County is like no other place on earth. With redwood forests, benchlands, hillsides, and nearly 80 miles of majestic coastline, Sonoma offers a wide variety of microclimates, soils, and terrain. This uniquely diverse region supports several different grape varieties but is best known for its lush Merlots and full-bodied Cabernets. Sonoma County is a designated American Viticultural Area (AVA) made up of thirteen distinctly different World-Class wine growing appellations. Each appellation and each vineyard within that appellation contributes something special - it is from this vibrant flavor palate that complex, expressive wines emerge. At Blackstone, we find Sonoma County inspiring. Each different AVA contributes something unique and special to the final blend. Our Sonoma Reserve wines, in particular, exemplify Sonoma’s signature style, and help set the standard carried through to our Winemaker’s Select wines. “Sonoma County is one of the most amazing places in the world to live and make wine,” observes Winemaker Gary Sitton. “There’s no place like it. The immense diversity—from the coastline to the mountains, valleys, and rivers—still leaves me in awe. For me, tapping into this range of growing conditions is fundamental to making beautifully expressive wines from Sonoma County.” From the start, our goal has been to produce smooth, flavorful, harmonious wines with rich fruit, supple texture, and balanced oak. Early on, this approach found its ideal expression in our Merlot, which soon became — and still remains — America’s favorite Merlot. Over the years, the same passion for consistent, balanced wines has expanded to new varieties bearing Blackstone’s trademark label. Our Winemaker’s Select wines are sourced from premier growing regions throughout California, each meticulously selected to contribute certain nuances to the final blend. Drawing from the best parcels in the same areas year after year ensures Winemaker’s Select wines maintain the consistency that is Blackstone’s heritage. Our signature style and quality is elevated in our Sonoma Reserve wines, which are sourced from Sonoma’s world-class vineyards. Each vineyard site contributes distinct characteristics that uniquely define the region. Through it all, Blackstone has stayed true to the approach inspired by our Sonoma roots - to craft wines that complement food and any occasion in which you celebrate the things in life you can count on. Good cheap wine - what you would expect from a $8-9 pinot - not bad at all but predictable for the price range

It's false to call it a "pinot noir." It's a blend of that, syrah and petite sirah. Fairly strong aromas of cherry, berries and black fruits, but none of the vanilla or spice advertised on the label. The big failing here is really in the sip. The taste is tart and there is really nothing going on in the palate. I should reiterate. Nothing is going on in the palate. It comes out all fruity and juicy, hits the tongue and then just disappears! This stuff is drinkable to be sure, but it's just plain boring. At that point I'd give this a solid 3, or a 2.5 perhaps in the $9 price range. But Blackstone comes along and one-ups the lackluster sip with an offensive finish. Only seconds after the flavor of the grape dissipates, a tinny... even pewter kind of taste fills the midpalate - it's almost like I just sucked on a really dirty penny. This wine has a Smokey Oak flavor that might put some off, but I must say I was very impressed with this wine's price. What you get is a very smooth Pinot Noir with a very prominent cherry/fruit flavor. I found the Vanilla to be a bit mild but then I appreciate that. I do recommend letting it breathe a bit.

Good value in a dry Pinot with real Salinas quality. Delicately structured and elegantly crisp, with silky tannins and cherry, cola and herb flavors.

Sideways converts looking for a relatively inexpensive Pinot will find this one a refreshing alternative to a big, heavy, tannic red wine. It's light and silky, with cherry, cola and herb flavors, and that bright Monterey acidity.

Proper varietal character here, a decent, regional wine with some ripe fruit and a long, tart finish. Cherries, coffee and strawberries, with good acids.

Blackstone became famous producing America’s most popular Merlot. The Sonoma based winery also produces other varietals like this Winemakers Select Pinot Noir which perhaps should be America’s favorite. It shows rich, berry-laden flavors and spicy nuances that are lush and seductive. All for a price that’s been absolutely unheard of for good-drinking Pinot of this caliber. They source the grapes from Monterey, North Central Valley, The North Coast and several other regions to find the best quality and to make the most Pinot-licious blend they possibly can. A real steal and a wine you won’t want to miss.

Tasting Notes:

Brimming with cherry and raspberry fruit, the 2008 Blackstone Winemaker’s Select Pinot Noir is a classic example of a vibrant, fruit- forward Pinot Noir. Blackstone selected top vineyards from California’s finest growing regions to create a supple, delicious Pinot Noir. The grapes from cool Monterey County and Valley North contribute refined fruit flavors while the fruit from Valley South, Paso Robles, and San Benito County imparts rich, concentrated layers to the blend. The final result is a distinctive and enjoyable California Pinot Noir. The grapes were night harvested and immediately delivered to the winery to maintain acidity and maximum freshness. Subsequently, the fruit was crushed, pressed, and then fermented. The juice then underwent malolactic fermentation in French and American oak barrels to enhance the textural profile and creamy mouthfeel. Displaying a delicate nose of rose petals and red raspberries followed by layers of toasted cinnamon and spice, the 2008 Blackstone Winemaker’s Select Pinot Noir is a balanced wine, with loads of lively raspberry, plum, and vanilla flavors. This medium-bodied Pinot Noir pairs nicely with roasted chicken, grilled salmon, and light cheeses.

Our California Pinot Noir has delicate black cherry, violet, and cola aromas, followed by a spicy and smoky oak in the background. This velvety wine is accented with delicious plum, raspberry and vanilla. The balance of fruit and acidity leaves a soft, lingering finish that’s perfect for salmon, grilled lamb chops, or your favorite gourmet pizza.
