Blackstone Winery Merlot Sonoma County 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

At Blackstone Winery, we believe in creating approachable and enjoyable wines from premium vineyards throughout California. Our 2007 Winemaker’s Select Merlot is a fruit-forward, expressive wine with vivid and accessible flavors. Carefully selecting vineyards that showcase the nuances of the Merlot grape variety help achieve our goal of crafting a distinctive California red wine. In 2007 the weather was very dry. The vineyards saw a minimal amount of rain, and temperatures remained cool throughout the winter and spring. The mild winter and spring delayed bud break and extended the harvest overall, enabling the fruit to develop slowly. Yields were significantly smaller than past vintages, but the quality of the fruit was excellent. Our 2007 Blackstone Winemaker’s Select Merlot displays toasted oak and brown sugar aromas followed by bright raspberry and plush black cherry flavors. Round and expressive, this complex but accessible wine pairs perfectly with beef tenderloin, wild mushroom stew, or planked salmon.

Sonoma County has always been Blackstone’s home and inspiration. Since our beginning we’ve established a reputation for consistently delivering balanced, reliable wines of uncompromising quality. For nearly 20 years, we’ve cultivated close ties with grape growers and viticulturists throughout Sonoma County. Both our inspiration and our home, Sonoma remains the heart of Blackstone. You’ll find the region’s signature style blended into every bottle. As a grape-growing region, Sonoma County is like no other place on earth. With redwood forests, benchlands, hillsides, and nearly 80 miles of majestic coastline, Sonoma offers a wide variety of microclimates, soils, and terrain. This uniquely diverse region supports several different grape varieties but is best known for its lush Merlots and full-bodied Cabernets. Sonoma County is a designated American Viticultural Area (AVA) made up of thirteen distinctly different World-Class wine growing appellations. Each appellation and each vineyard within that appellation contributes something special - it is from this vibrant flavor palate that complex, expressive wines emerge. At Blackstone, we find Sonoma County inspiring. Each different AVA contributes something unique and special to the final blend. Our Sonoma Reserve wines, in particular, exemplify Sonoma’s signature style, and help set the standard carried through to our Winemaker’s Select wines. “Sonoma County is one of the most amazing places in the world to live and make wine,” observes Winemaker Gary Sitton. “There’s no place like it. The immense diversity—from the coastline to the mountains, valleys, and rivers—still leaves me in awe. For me, tapping into this range of growing conditions is fundamental to making beautifully expressive wines from Sonoma County.” From the start, our goal has been to produce smooth, flavorful, harmonious wines with rich fruit, supple texture, and balanced oak. Early on, this approach found its ideal expression in our Merlot, which soon became — and still remains — America’s favorite Merlot. Over the years, the same passion for consistent, balanced wines has expanded to new varieties bearing Blackstone’s trademark label. Our Winemaker’s Select wines are sourced from premier growing regions throughout California, each meticulously selected to contribute certain nuances to the final blend. Drawing from the best parcels in the same areas year after year ensures Winemaker’s Select wines maintain the consistency that is Blackstone’s heritage. Our signature style and quality is elevated in our Sonoma Reserve wines, which are sourced from Sonoma’s world-class vineyards. Each vineyard site contributes distinct characteristics that uniquely define the region. Through it all, Blackstone has stayed true to the approach inspired by our Sonoma roots - to craft wines that complement food and any occasion in which you celebrate the things in life you can count on. Light tobacco and nilla wafer notes greet the nose with hightones of gingery oak spice framing the cherry fruit. This is a bit light on the palate with a bit of a loose feel with very soft tannins, though there is plenty of acidity. The fruit is a bit on the candied side with a sweet raspberry and red plum core that has notes of mint and chocolate adding interest. The tannins gain traction on the backend and through the moderately long candied red fruit, mint and coffee tinged finish. 87pts

A touch meaty and spicy at first but this quickly shows it’s true colors adding strong notes of cocoa to the nose over a base of fresh and dried plummy fruit. On the palate this is a bit drying, showing noticeably wood tannin, but underneath that is a soft, round, medium bodied wine with nice bright fruit. The tannins are aggressive right through the mid-palate and while not really very tannic, they do remain the focus of attention. On the backend flavors of spicy cinnamon and allspice emerge as the fruit begins to assert itself, but the tannin win the battle as they recover the fruit on the finish. Aromatically there is a lot to like here and even on the palate there are glimpses of a nice, fresh, red plummy wine lurking under the tannins, but this needs some time to allow the tannins to soften and integrate. 86pts

Black peppper and paprika on the nose, with mint, bay leaf, and cardamom. Best described as smoked herbal sausage. The mouth has good tannins, and there's a buttery texture that stays on the palate for a long time. I could drink a few glasses.

Warm dark ruby, aromas of red stone fruits and tobacco, black cherry, black plum notes framed by firm tanning on the back of good acidity to a long, focused finished. Not a wimpy Merlot, but not a bruiser either.

Dark berries, luscious and juicy. A little sweet. Rich and full. Reminds me of Steve Brule, 'Sweet berry wine!'

Has mocha and vanilla flavors, but also an edge of sourness. It's plump in the mouth, with soft tannins; oak is heavy on the finish.

Packed with berry and spice aromas, this rustic wine has jagged tannins. It's your basic table red, with good acidity, alcohol, a deep color and ripe flavors. Best of all, the price tag is just right.

Wonderfully delicious year after year, the 2000 Blackstone is filled with ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit, a core of toasty oak, and a silky mouthfeel. The mild tannins and somewhat off-dry finish make this a great choice by itself or paired with grilled vegetables or classic roast chicken.

Black cherry flavors come with the spiciness of wood in this warm, soy sauce scented Merlot. It's a simple red for burgers.

Rich fruit aromas, elegance, supple oak character and soft tannins. With lifted dark cherry and berry aromas and a touch of spicy clove, this wine is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. The texture is ripe and soft in the mouth, with bright cherry fruit flavors and a soft, lingering finish.
