Founded in 2003 by Michael Polenske, Blackbird Vineyards is an artisanal producer of Pomerol inspired wines from the Napa Valley. Planted in 1997, the estate vineyard is located in the heart of the Oak Knoll District—a region appreciated for its moderate climate and deep, gravelly soils. The vineyard’s valley floor topography presents optimum growing conditions for consulting winemaker Sarah Gott and winemaker Aaron Pott to produce elegantly styled, appropriately balanced red wines that offer short and long term cellaring potential. Limited quantities are available through an allocated mailing list direct from the winery and in the finer restaurants and hotels around the world. Blackbird Vineyards is closed to the public but its portfolio of wines can be tasted at Ma(i)sonry Napa Valley in Yountville, CA. www.maisonry.com Read less

Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. A deeper, more-layered and altogether richer look at Merlot than most, this compelling wine is long on sweet oak and rife with classic varietal black cherry fruit. It tempers its very real sense of power with plenty of polish, and it is wonderfully well-balanced with more than enough fruity extract to buffer its ample young tannins. It is a serious wine that is meant for the cellar, and it deserves a wait of five years or more before finding its way to the table.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the November 2010 issue. This bottling's course is set by its two Cabernets more than by its fraction of Merlot, but the three varietals are beautifully fit in this deep and very complex presentation. Long on ripe cherries, cassis, sweet oak and briary spice, the wine is at once both big and quite well-proportioned, and, and even though it is gruff and tannic just now, it finishes with lots of confident fruit effortlessly easing past its youthful astringency. Like its similarly successful sibling, it is not one for drinking anytime soon, and it should be held for at least five or six years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.

On the palate the wine is rich and delicious, delivering flavors of black raspberry, unsweetened coco, peppercorn, chocolate, and earth. The wine finishes with some really nice supple tannin and a coco-cassis layered finish.
