Black Sears Zinfandel Napa Valley Howell Mountain Estate 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Smoke, fudge and soil tones accent the core of black fruit on the nose. This is a big wine, fairly dry, with a lovely firm texture and slightly creamy flavors that, juxtaposed against the firmness, make for an elegant and powerful mouthfeel. There’s plenty of earthy mountain fruit here in the blackberry end of the spectrum turning more black raspberried on the moderately long finish. 92 points

The Black Sears vineyard lies nestled among hundreds of acres of wild oak forests at the top of Howell Mountain. Originally an apple orchard, the property was purchased by Joyce Black-Sears and Jerre Sears in 1980 and is where they’ve made their home for nearly 30 years. The vineyard became a true “family” endeavor last year when Joyce and Jerre were joined by their daughter, Ashley, and her fiancée Chris. The Black Sears family is committed to caring for the land they love and call home, employing organic and biodynamic farming methods in their vineyard as well as in their orchard and gardens. And it shows. Wine lovers who have enjoyed the product of Black Sears fruit will testify: “there’s just something special about that vineyard.” Sitting high above the valley fog, the vineyard shares its home with black bears, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, and more than a little poison oak. At over 2400 feet, it is the highest vineyard on Howell Mountain and is among the highest vineyards in all of Napa Valley. The unique climate of Howell Mountain gives its grapes a better structure with intense fruit flavors and bright acidity. The ashy, iron-laden soils are perfectly suited for growing full-bodied zinfandel and soft, elegant cabernet sauvignon. These wild, mountaintop conditions combine to produce wines of firm structure, incredible intensity, and the intrepid flavors of a remote and distinctive terrain. For many years, the fruit of the Black Sears vineyard has been sought by some of the finest wineries in California. The prestigious roster includes Elyse, Cornerstone, Turley, Howell Mountain Vineyards, and D-Cubed. In 1997, Joyce and Jerre began to produce small quantities of Black Sears Estate Wine from the vineyard's finest fruit, a few hundred cases per vintage. That tradition continues with the addition of Ashley and Chris, and a passionate and masterful new winemaker, Thomas Rivers Brown. Read less
