Black Opal established in 1986, comes from a place of untamed territories and unspoiled land. This is Australia. The land they call "Oz". The land down under. Brimming with life, Australia is a dreamland rich in culture, diversity and natural history. This is apparent in the crystal blue skies above, in the red landscape, even the glistening opal, and a gem that dates back 60 million years. The Black Opal wines are sourced from vineyards found in South Australia along the Limestone Coast, at Langhorne Creek and in the infamous Barossa Valley. The Limestone Coast vineyards are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot. The region, known for producing reds of outstanding quality is rich with the famous "Terra Rossa" soil, which overlays a hard layer of limestone. Cabernet Sauvignon is a star performer on the Limestone Coast - producing Black Opal wines with a distinctive blackcurrant and cassis aroma. Langhorne Creek is another famous region for red wines. Southeast of Adelaide, the region boasts Cabernet and Shiraz with characteristic "chocolate mint" aromas and an incredible richness in flavor. The Barossa Valley is one of Australia's oldest and most famous wine-producing areas. Established in the 1840s, it has built a reputation for producing powerful Shiraz based wines and full flavored Chardonnay. Read less

I found Black Opal Cabernet Sauvignon to be nicely balanced between the sweetness and tannins (broad enough description?). I indeed could taste the black currant, spice, and maybe a hint of cranberry?

This is a wonderful wine for the price point. I sensed cherry and pepper flavors. One of the best finishes of any wine I've tried. Love it!

This is typically Australian in its rich, outgoing fruit. The density and concentration are all based around great black-fruit flavors, which give strength and power to the wine. Delicious, soft tannins underpin it, but hardly affect the ripeness of the fruit.

The rich varietal blackcurrant, mint and spice nose is well supported by a palate that is full of fruit flavor, balanced by the subtle use of oak. The wine is warm in the mouth and the tannins are soft and well integrated. This is a classic Australian red wine made from the world's most noble red variety.

An easily likable, unpretentious Cabernet meant for everyday enjoyment, displaying spicy berry and black currant flavors backed by light tannins.

The nose starts out with bacon and toast. the palate is loaded with cranberry and cherry fruit, but that doesn't mean it's lean and mean. Quite the contrary; it's round and spicy, with some Zin-like character to the flavor profile.

Supple and elegantly balanced, with a core of pretty plum and berry flavors and light layers of spice and earth wafting across it. Very tasty now.
