Black Label Chenin Blanc 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Situated in the north of New Zealand’s picturesque Hawkes Bay, at Bay View is The Esk Valley Estate winery. The winery sources fruit from Hawkes Bay, including the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels and Marlborough, as both regions consistently produce grapes of an extremely high quality. Esk Valley is a boutique winery, but it is unique in that many of the techniques used to craft its award-winning wines are dictated by the winery itself. The old concrete vats, the layout of the buildings, and the absence of modern technology mean the people at Esk Valley have had to make wine in a simple, honest, hands-on way. The people at Esk Valley are as important to the wine-making process as the vines and the high quality grapes they produce. The main pre-requisite for working at Esk Valley is a genuine passion and excitement for wine. This Chenin Blanc is a product of two Hawkes Bay vineyard sites. Eighty five percent of the blend was sourced from the Moteo Ridge vineyard inland at Moteo Pa on the banks of the Tutaekuri River. The fruit from this vineyard provides ripe pear and apple fruit flavours and excellent natural acidity while the Back Vineyard on the Gimblett Gravels produces wine with ripe tropical fruit notes and a hint of botrytis. This is a full bodied white with classic Chenin Blanc characters of honey, quince and stonefruit with a mineral-like acidity. The palate is full with a touch of residual sugar balancing the natural acidity. It is ideal with seafood, Asian and Indian-style dishes.

GOLD MEDAL - The International Wine Show 2008 (NZ) This is a full bodied white with classic Chenin Blanc characters of honey, quince and stonefruit with a mineral like acidity. The palate is full with a touch of residual sugar balancing the acidity. Great with goats cheese or enjoy with a wide array of seafood dishes and although enjoyable as a young wine, Esk Valley's experience with previous vintages suggests that the wine will develop further complexity with 2 to 4 years ageing.
