Since 1999 we have progressively planted more acreage on our 30-acre orchard/vineyard property in Riesling grapes. We also are experimenting with Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, both of which look promising. Our vineyards are within sight of the Gunnison Gorge, which lies just below the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The Black Canyon is one of the most dramatic canyons in the world, and was recently named as one of America’s newest National Parks. Our vineyards and winery are named after this wild and spectacular wilderness. The vineyards are situated at an elevation of approximately 5800 feet, on the southern slopes of the Grand Mesa. To the west lies the Uncompahgre Plateau, and further west the spectacular desert and canyon country of Eastern Utah. The location is perfect for cool climate grapes, which is one of the reasons we settled in the valley of the North Fork of the Gunnison River. This property had been in a fruit growing family for over 40 years, and was known for producing some of the finest Red and Golden Delicious, Jonathan and Jonagold apples in Colorado, as well as outstanding tart cherries. Unfortunately, due to competition from foreign apple producers, many of the historically- significant apple producing areas of the Western United States are declining in producing acreage. Western Colorado is no different. We still produce wonderful apples of most of these varieties, but our future is clearly in wine. In 1999 we planted a plot of Riesling grapes, because we knew the variety would succeed in our climate of long, warm days and cool nights. Riesling produced from other North Fork growers had won many national and international awards in the years preceding 1999. We traveled to Switzerland and Western Germany to study the Riesling vineyards of these famous growing areas, and came back even more convinced that our climate would produce world-class Riesling grapes. We have always loved the amazing variety of wines available from Riesling grapes, as one can experience in the famous German products. Riesling wine has been attracting increasing attention, including recent articles in Wine Spectator and the New York Times. It has been described as the white wine of the future, and many think it is quickly replacing Chardonnay as the white wine of choice in America. Our Riesling vines have done extremely well, producing their first commercial crop in 2003. Our harvests have consistently produced very high quality results, with an almost perfect balance. We are very proud of our Riesling wines, and believe that they compete in quality with any produced in North America. As we continue to refine our vineyards and begin making wine in our new state-of-the-art facility in 2005, we hope to become Colorado’s leading producer of Riesling wine, made exclusively from grapes grown within a few miles of our winery on the high mesas of Western Colorado. Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
