Editorial Reviews for Black Box Merlot
A little vegetal on the nose, which adds a nice detail to the wood toast, cocoa and plum notes on the nose. This is touch sweet, blocky and clumsy in the mouth with a rich, feel but not much middle to the cocoa, plum and wood spice fruit though that light vegetal element does appear aromatically. Not much finish here except for a bit of tannin and more cocoa notes. Plush and boring. 82pts
The nose is fairly simple and direct with earthy, oaky tones framing leafy, tobacco tinged black fruits with hints of licorice and cocoa. Round and soft with a suggestion of orange peel on entry which is followed by a round mid-palate with a sweet, dried cherry and coca dusted quality that leads to a gently tannic, bright red cherry toned finish. 85pts.
User Reviews for Black Box Merlot
Add your reviewPlum and blackberry nose. Flavors are tart, with good acidity, light tannin and a hint of black olive on the finish.
Fruity hot nose. Medium bodied and chalky in the mouth with a bright acidic finish.
Softly sweet earthy nose. Quite sweet, but with good typical merlot mouthfeel, and flavors of coffee, spice, anise. There's a manufactured quality on the mid palate, but its not too distracting. Finishes on a nice tartness of bitter cherry and plums.
Very reserved nose. I found this a tad austere, with some tightness making it difficult to pick out specific aromas or flavors. Does grow on you though and is a fair merlot. - Schreiner's Winers: Thinking in the Box tasting
Was very surprised by this wine, smooth, balanced, great everyday wine!
I absolutely found it drinkable which is high praise for me for US available box wine. In France one can actually get truly enjoyable box wine. Gregory, you're gonna hate me...;-) but I'd be surprised if you really meant "coca dusted"... But if you did, the sales may spike... Be well, David
External Reviews for Black Box Merlot
Black Box Merlot is a decent enough Merlot, though we fail to see why many people seem to hold up Black Box as the pinnacle of bag-in-box wines. The aroma is nice, with pepper, clove, and berry notes. The flavor offers some cherry and blackberry notes, with quite a bit of oak and a medium spicy finish. There’s not a lot of complexity, and the feel is a bit generic, but it’s an adequate red wine.

At about $6 per bottle equivalent, this Merlot-in-a-box is a terrific buy. It's a dry, stylish red wine, whose cherry, herb and subtle oak flavors are polished. If you've shied away from boxed wines, try this one. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
The best things about this boxed Merlot are its dryness and balance. Shows a real understanding of the way acids, tannins, fruit and oak should interplay. The blackberry and currant flavors are not enormously concentrated, but this is quite an attractive wine, and a great value at this price.

The red raspberry jam flavors of this wine are fading into caramel and autumn leaves. Fully mature and ready for roast beef. The best things about this boxed Merlot are its dryness and balance.
