Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells a bit herbal, but very identifiably Cabernet with black currant fruit that just a bit too jammy. There’s some nicely integrated wood spice here as well. Nothing over the top but noticeable. A little sweet at first, and slightly rustic and chunky but relatively well balanced and fresh with a nice core of plum and red currant fruit gentle touched with herb , cocoa and wood spice. The finish shows more wood influence as well as that sweetness that lends this a bit of jamminess and good length. Serviceable Cabernet 84pts

The 2014 Cab from Chile was clearly filled with too much Mega Purple which is created by the same conglomerate that owns Black Box. Bummer, since I loved the Black Box Merlot!!

Pineapple Upside-down Cake in a box! Its remarkable, but a little odd compared to other cabernets. Overall, not offensive and definitely suitable for events where cost really does matter.

Green olives and pineapples on the nose. Pineapples and citrus continue through the mouth, the wine is green and not in my style. Finishes with a tart citrus tang.

The most impressive of any box wine I have tried. A nice, middle tier cabernet. Nicely balanced oak and fruit. Great for a party or that easy, everyday glass of red wine. - Schreiner's Winers: Thinking in the Box tasting

Surprisingly quaffable coming from a box with a spiggot, but when you consider it carries the volume of four 750ml bottles and stays fresh for up to 4 weeks due to the packaging, it's a great everyday drinking wine or volume for a party. Everyone who tried it enjoyed it. Nice, well rounded and approachable cab. Nothing magical, but tasty.

Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon 3L Our Cabernet Sauvignon is smooth and easy drinking. Aromas of blackberry, ripe olives and toasted oak are complemented by flavors of dark cherry with chocolate. The full body finishes long with rich chewy tannins. It's a great Cabernet for accompanying roasted beef or dishes with full flavored sauces.

Tasting Notes - The Cabernet is a full-bodied wine displaying lovely aromas of black currants with hints of vanilla and toasty oak. Flavors of juicy red berries and chocolate come together with smooth tannins, leading to a soft and lingering finish. The wine pairs well with filet mignon and roast duck as well as wild mushroom ravioli.

Easy-drinking, smooth and balanced, with a pleasant earthy core of plum, blackberry, anise and other spices. Modest tannins. Drink now.

Black Box's 3-liter Cab, in an attractive black box, costs the equivalent of a $5 a bottle. Mainly from Paso Robles fruit, it's a little raw and rustic. But it has the qualities of dryness and full-bodied fruitiness, and is a good buy for an everyday, party-style wine.
