Bitch Grenache Barossa 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

This wine, formerly from Australia, is now made in Aragon, Spain. Not yet reviewed, but following are notes from winemaker Chris Ringland: I blended Bitch Grenache Aragon 2009 from a selection of un-oaked Grenache wines from various sub-regions of Aragon and Navarra, around the Southern regions of the Ebro river valley... Grenache (Garnacha) survives here without the need for irrigation. Yields are typically low and this, combined with a historical selection of small-berried, deeply colored clones, produces wines of a more 'masculine' expression of the variety. Dark cherry and raspberry aromas are underpinned with spicy, peppery notes with hints of anise. Aragon Grenache displays extraordinary natural acid balance, even at elevated ripeness levels. I have selected wines, which convey vibrant, juicy fruit together with a very soft, sweet-fruited palate structure... the style for Bitch Grenache is all about fruit aromas and flavors. Maturation without oak influence enhances the natural fruit expression of these selections... Bitch Aragon Grenache is very approachable now, but don’t be deceived into thinking that it won’t age. I predict that the wine will develop further personality with 3 to 5 years in the cellar.

Cherry/berry flavors are held in check by notes of spice and black licorice. Very lovely and elegant. 91pts

Would recommend to first-time red drinkers. Not overwhelmingly fruity and has just enough tannins to make it a little more complex. Very drinkable.

Amber-edged red. Candied strawberry and raspberry on the nose. Light-bodied but slightly syrupy red berry flavors are uncomplicated and a touch slippery. Finishes somewhat abruptly but leaves sweet, confectionery red fruit notes behind. Drink this very cold, as you would a simple rosé.

Bitch Grenache is sourced from 40- to 60-year-old vines from the Ebenezer sub-region of the Barossa. With the price of Cotes du Rhone soaring due to the weak dollar, I am hard pressed to think of a better value in full-flavored Grenache. The 2006 Bitch Grenache received no oak treatment. Medium ruby-colored, it presents an alluring bouquet of earth, smoke, rhubarb, cherry, and strawberry. Supple, sweet, and tasty, this wine totally over-delivers for its humble price and is an exceptional value.

A spectacular bargain, this 100% Grenache (from 40-year-old vines) has nothing ldquo;bitchyrdquo; about it. Gorgeous kirsch liqueur intermixed with pepper and soil undertones result in an Australian Grenache that tastes like a Vacqueyras on steroids. Medium to full-bodied, supple-textured, and silky, this is a stunning example of a value-priced Barossa red. The good news is there is 4,000 cases, and the packaging was designed by someone with considerable imagination. Drink it over the next 1ndash;2 years.

Now hailing from Spain this bitch is light-bodied fruity and fun! The nose is juicy; the entry is dark fruits with not too much development; the finish is smooth slightly metallic. A great party wine that everyone is sure to enjoy!
