What to Expect

Champagne is specifically a sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France; every other sparkling is simply that, sparkling wine. Made to be aged for a few to many years, in many languages "Champagne" is synonymous with "party". When young, Champagne exhibits the fresh fruit tones of its "cepage", or blend. Usually based on a blend the features either Chardonnay or Pinot Noir as its main ingredient, Champagne's fruit can range from citrusy to orchard fruits and even red berries. The wine gains distinct yeasty notes from its secondary fermentation, the one that adds the fizz, which is typically described as recalling brioche or bread. As it ages Champagne tends to lose its obvious fruit, which is replaced by subtle nutty tones and subdued elements of dried fruits.

Appearance: Persistent mousse, with fine bubbles rising slowly. Pale salmon pink in color, with a shade of gold. Aroma: A nose of red fruits and fresh pear. Taste: Delicate fruit on the palate, elegant, and showing great finesse.

Very dry yet fruity rose champagne. Bright peachy and citrusy notes. Very delicate and lovely.

Rating: 91/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 129, November/December 2006 ($75) Pale, orange-tinged pink. Vibrant, spicy aromas of orange peel, ruby-red grapefruit and floral honey. Focused and pure, with juicy orange and tangy rhubarb flavors and a lush, velvety texture. This is weightier than previous bottlings of this cuvee, but has the usual precision and lift expected by long-time fans of this rose. Finishes with juicy citrus flavors and a late mineral jolt.

One of my all-time favorite rose Champagnes. Balanced, refreshing and fruity... and consistently delicious.

Still one my favorite non-vintage Champagnes. This has real grace, with soft berry fruit aromas, gorgeous texture and a long, clean finish. It doesn't knock you over the head but lures you in very seductively.

Light red fruity nose. Nice bubbles, very soft acidity (nicely muted by the fruit). Some bready yeast notes, but very mild. Served with a ginger pork noodle broth. Lovely.
