Big House Wine Company Big House Red 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Score: N/A Tasting Notes: This Big House Red lives up to that old Fruit Bomb moniker that you’ve come to expect. It starts with a nose full of loganberries and raspberries, with hints of leather and spices. The palate is clean, exhibiting flavors of cranberries, roses, and a touch of rhubarb. This finish lingers, with flavors of vanilla, and dare I say a touch of smoke. Pairs well with all grilled meats, lasagna bolognese, grilled vegetables, and even sashimi grade Ahi tuna. The Big House wines were born of the subversive notion that the California climate is more hospitable to the rollicking, sun loving grapes of Mediterranean France, Italy and Spain than some other varieties that should probably remain nameless (eg: cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and merlot). In the big house we have gone back to our roots, blending these distinct varieties to create a far more complex wine that elegantly matches a wide variety of cuisine, from pizza, to BBQ ribs and roast chicken. Why Is It Called Big House? Our Soledad Winery in Monterey County, is a mere ankle iron’s toss from the Soledad State Correctional Facility, aka The Clink, The Slammer, The Hoosegow, The Cooler. Our vineyard portrayed next to The Pokey in a visually benevolent milieu likely not familiar to the “residents” of the Big House, yields a most compelling wine. The Big House actually resides on an oenophilic temporal door between California and the Mediterranean. Our winemaking philosophy is driven by several very salient themes, that include: 1) Having as much fun as possible in the enterprise of winemaking as the government agencies will allow; 2) producing wine and wine labels that will inspire and move people; 3) retaining as much of the natural qualities of the grapes as possible, and making wines that are friendly both to foods and the people that consume them; 4) Always giving priority to lesser known varietals in the hopes of uprooting the homogeneous mass that is currently controlling out palate and our wallet. Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

This is just a fun wine to enjoy. Don't be pretentious. This is just what it claims to be, an eclectic blend of grapes that makes a fruity, slightly sweet table wine. It is a perfect wine for just enjoying with friends who are not caught up on complexity, hints of oak, soil, etc. You will not taste or recognize any of those things. This is a very good wine that is one of my favorites for just drinking and enjoying. I have bought many bottles of this wine, and I will keep coming back. Without sounding demeaning, this is like having a coke in the wine world. Just drink it and smile.

This is a multiberry mix. About 12 I think. Full of flavor and body. Drier than other Big House wines I've tried with a very strong aftertaste.

This big, powerful red wine is made from too many varietals to name, but they all bring something to the table. It tastes jammy and fresh in acidity, with berry, cherry, spice and earthy flavors.

A big fruit bomb. Flavors and aromas of loganberries and raspberries are pushed along by mild tannins. The finish is rich and flavorful with a touch of spice.
