Bibi Graetz Sangiovese Blend Toscana IGT Testamatta 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

A blend of 70% Sangiovese grosso 15% Colorino 12% Canaiolo and 3% Malvasia nera and Moscato nero. This inky dense rich Tuscan gem is a mouthful of blackberry and black cherry with licorice and coffee notes. Its immense succulence and velvety tannins quickly established this winery as one to watch!

The 2006 Testamatta (Sangiovese) is a pretty wine redolent of crushed flowers, raspberries, toasted oak and spices, with lovely inner perfume that emerges as the wine sits in the glass. As outstanding as this wine is, the 2006 doesnrsquo;t appear to have the polish, generosity and overall balance of the very finest vintages. Today the wine comes across as linear in style, with drying tannins that clamp down on the finish, qualities I found in both bottles I tasted. In 2006 Graetz opted for a super-selective approach in which he produced just 10,000 bottles of Testamatta as opposed to the more normal 18,000ndash;20,000. One can only wonder is some amount of balance and harmony was sacrificed in the process. Anticipated maturity: 2016ndash;2026.

Offers beautiful blackberry, coffee bean and chocolate aromas, with toasty oak undertones. Full-bodied, with supervelvety tannins and a finish that lasts for minutes, featuring loads of milk chocolate and fruit character. So layered. This is mind-blowing. A fabulous pure Sangiovese that shows the great quality of the vintage. Best after 2011.

The 2005 Testamatta is 100% Sangiovese aged 18 months in new French oak. It is a beautiful, pleasing Testamatta in its sweet red cherry fruit layered with sweet toasted oak. The wine remains quite vibrant and in need of further bottle in age in order for the full range of its aromas and flavors to come through. This shows notable harmony. It is a terrific effort from one of Italy's finest growers. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2022.

Lots of plum skin, violet, blackberry and cedar aromas follow through to a full body, with toasty oak and currant. Firm finish. Solid as a rock. Sangiovese. Best after 2009.
