Château Beychevelle is a historic estate and Grand Cru Classé wine in Saint Julien, Bordeaux that dates back to the 15th century. During the reign of Henri III of France, the estate was the home of Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, the Duke of Epernon, who was so powerful that ships who passed before his Château had to lower their sails. Hence the proprietary motif of the ship with the “basse-voile” (lowered sail) and the griffin, who according to legend would guard the cellar of wine god Dionysius.    Wines have been produced here since the 17th century. It was classified as a “fourth growth” (Quatrième Cru) in the 1855 Classification. It has passed through the hands of many owners since its begninnings, and is now part of the Grande Millésimes de France. The vineyards are planted with 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 25 years. The Grand Vin of the estate is Château Beychevelle, and their second wine, Admiral de Beychevelle.  Read less

Pleasant nose but rather hollowed-out palate. Decent enough now, but not for keeping

A bit on the austere side at first in the nose and on the palate but after 20 minutes of breathing developed into a well balanced wine. Color, mahogany around the edges and fruit still strong with soft tanins.

Delightful. Tastes "light" but lovely fruit and integration. Not a great deal of length in the mouth. Definately drink now.

Well cellared for the last 12 years, this is the third of 6. Wonderful St Julien nose, perfect village mix, couldn't be anything else...great colour, still bright red to the edge, nose is still slightly hard, a perfect blend of fruit and tanins, total perfection as claret. Far better than I expected from this now unpopular property, this is a total delight. 11/10 for this effort, skilled winemaking that is the epitome of what makes village wines so rewarding.... Would you pay €100+ for this? Not sure, but I paid €28 in 1998 and it's wonderful, a real treat and totally memorable..nose and taste logged forever as a real star.

One of the best bottles from Beychevelle in a long time. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and aromas of raspberry and mint with a hint of violet. Lead pencil and fruit appear on the long aftertaste.--1988 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2000. Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 1988 Beychevelle 750ml
