Betz Family Winery la Cote Rousse Washington 95rr 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2009 Syrah La Cote Rousse (100%) was sourced from two of the better Red Mountain vineyards and aged for 12 months in 50% new French oak. Sexy aromas of smoke, exotic spices, brier, incense, blueberry, and black raspberry lead to a plush, layered, round Syrah with a sense of elegance. This lengthy, concentrated, nicely proportioned effort will also evolve for 2-3 years and provide pleasure through 2023...93" WA 8/11 "Even inkier in color than the La Serenne, with more edgy aromas of smoked blackberries, dried beef, huge crushed rock like minerality, crushed flowers, and graphite, the 2009 Betz Family Syrah La Côte Rousse is full-bodied, incredibly concentrated, and yet light on its feet, with a clean, elegant texture, integrated acidity, and beautifully focused finish. As with the La Serenne, this needs cellar time. Give bottles at least another 3-4 years in the cellar. I really don‟t think it will hit maturity until after a decade or more...95" Rhone Report 06/12

We've had one way of making wine since that first vintage, 1997: keep it small, keep it simple and keep it focused. In our first vintage we produced about 150 cases total; and we leveled out at 3500 cases a few years ago. We've limited ourselves to a quantity we can watch over, in the vineyard and the cellar. By working with selected, dedicated grape growers and employing methods that we believe craft superior wine, we hope to create wines of individual character, a blend of richness, balance and pleasure. Our winemaking focuses on the purity of the individual varieties and the vineyards they come from. We do those things that a small winery has the luxury of doing: we know every barrel. Read less
