Two families established Bethel Heights Vineyard in 1977, in the Eola Hills northwest of Salem, Oregon. Twin brothers Ted and Terry Casteel and their partners Pat Dudley and Marilyn Webb detoured into winemaking after trying their hands at other careers and interests. Ted and Pat were graduate students doing historical research in France when they discovered the joys of wine. Marilyn and Terry were practicing therapists in Seattle when they started drinking Burgundy and became wine enthusiasts. Reunited by their newfound interest in wine, in 1977 the two families, together with Pat's sister Barbara Dudley, bought 75 promising looking acres and started a new life. For the first thirty years Ted was responsible for the vineyards and Terry made the wine. Pat and Marilyn shared responsibility for marketing and business. Recently the Bethel Heights team has expanded to include second generation leadership and ownership, bringing youthful energy, talent and passion into the blend. The new additions to the team are Ben and Jon Casteel (Terry and Marilyn's sons) and Mimi and Jessie Casteel (Ted and Pat's daughters), who all grew up at Bethel Heights then took off in various directions before finding their way back home. Over the past twenty years Bethel Heights has been known for limited bottlings of distinctive vineyard designated and block designated Pinot Noir wines. In 2002 they took a new path and produced their first Casteel Reserve Pinot Noir, blending select barrels from several different vineyard sites. It has turned out to be a very exciting wine in each succeeding vintage. The aromatic profile is dominated by currant, black cherry, and oak spice. The palate is concentrated, featuring dense black and red fruits fruit and a subtle earthiness, framed by vibrant acids that not only provide the wine with length, but also provide the necessary structure for aging. Fine grain tannins round out this wine.

The 2006 Pinot Noir Casteel Reserve is medium ruby-colored with an alluring perfume of wood smoke, damp earth, black cherry, and black raspberry. This is followed by a wine with excellent focus, density, and intense, savory dark fruits, It is well balanced, nicely structured, and has a long, fruit-filled close. Give it 2-3 years of additional bottle age and drink it from 2010 to 2018. Light, silky and open-textured, with vivid currant and blackberry flavors, shaded with spice and black olive notes, lingering nicely on the generous finish. Drink now through 2014. 747 cases made. -HS Vivid red. Smoky cherry-vanilla, sassafras and underbrush aromas are strikingly seductive.
