Bethel Heights Pinot Gris Oregon 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

"Tropical aromas of banana, lychee, and breadfruit with hints of key lime clover honey. The palate features both the supple fruit of a warm Oregon vintage paired with the nervy acidity of our Estate fruit. This young wine is inviting now, but for the patient, this wine will benefit from a few years in the bottle." - Winemaker's notes

Two families established Bethel Heights Vineyard in 1977, in the Eola Hills northwest of Salem, Oregon. Twin brothers Ted and Terry Casteel and their partners Pat Dudley and Marilyn Webb detoured into winemaking after trying their hands at other careers and interests. Ted and Pat were graduate students doing historical research in France when they discovered the joys of wine. Marilyn and Terry were practicing therapists in Seattle when they started drinking Burgundy and became wine enthusiasts. Reunited by their newfound interest in wine, in 1977 the two families, together with Pat's sister Barbara Dudley, bought 75 promising looking acres and started a new life. For the first thirty years Ted was responsible for the vineyards and Terry made the wine. Pat and Marilyn shared responsibility for marketing and business. Recently the Bethel Heights team has expanded to include second generation leadership and ownership, bringing youthful energy, talent and passion into the blend. The new additions to the team are Ben and Jon Casteel (Terry and Marilyn's sons) and Mimi and Jessie Casteel (Ted and Pat's daughters), who all grew up at Bethel Heights then took off in various directions before finding their way back home. Slightly floral nose, lychee and stone fruits dominate. Dry, but with solid floral and sweet fruit, spicy finish. My first oregon pinot grigio and not bad at all.

While we can certainly enjoy a simple, gulpable Pinot Grigio from the U.S. orItaly, we've always preferred a PinotGrigio or Pinot Gris with a little bitmore stuffing. At its best, these arearomatic wines that can offer someweight, with hints of melon, tangerineand minerals, maybe some mouthfeeland even a hint of oiliness. They shouldhave enough acidity to pull that offwithout any heaviness.

Winemaker's Notes:" Aromas of mineral, lemon zest, sea salt, and autumn fruits. Exuberant entry featuring focused green apple and Asian pears, bright framing acidity, and a long steely finish. This wine, while approachable now, will benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring."
