Bertani Secco-Bertani Original Vintage Edition 2009

External Review by Palm Bay International:

Located near Verona in the province of Veneto in northeast Italy, Casa Vinicola Bertani is one of the region’s most important and influential wine producers. Bertani produces a full spectrum of the classic wines of the Veneto and has enjoyed a reputation for quality from the start. Secco-Bertani has been in continuous production for over 150 years and is rightly extolled as the “grandfather” of Veronese wines. Secco-Bertani “Vintage Edition” is our tribute to the past as a way of enriching the present. It is an opportunity to rediscover a time period by taking a leap back to the past. Secco-Bertani created the Verona style of wine-making, well before Amarone and Ripasso, by using the best technology and the best grapes available at the time. That is why Bertani is the only company that can convincingly create a Vintage Edition by drawing inspiration from its own tradition. The project is nothing less than the re-production of a Secco-Bertani wine according to the recipe, style and taste of an earlier age, even down to the original 1930s package design. The old style bottle from the 1920s, the reproduction of the original 1930s label, the short tin capsule and the 6-bottle replica case from the 1940s: these are the details that make this a truly vintage product. Secco-Bertani Orignial Vintage Edition will be produced every year. Production Area Veneto, Italy Appellation: Verona IGT From prime estate vineyards in the heart of Verona’s Valpolicella Valpantena wine district. The vines are cultivated using the”spalliera” method. Vines are trained using the “Guyot” method with a density of 5,000 vines/ha grown at higher altitudes of great than 750 ft. Grape Varieties 80% Original Corvina clones (Rizza, Nera and Corvinone), 10% Sangiovese grosso, 5% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon Vinification A very long cold maceration on the skins before the original natural Bertani yeasts begin to ferment the wine. The wine is then drained off while still a little sweet and then goes through a further long, slow fermentation process partially in wood. Color Dark ruby core, red to platinum rim. Bouquet Plum, cocoa powder, cherry cordial. Dried aromatic herbs Taste Sour cherry palate, black tea and cherry pit. Dusty tannin profile with mid-palate grip and a generous coffee bean finish. Alcohol and acid are moderate and balanced. Good concentration. Pure and linear. Lovely old-vine complexity though it seems youthful at this point. Dry, well-balanced with a pleasing hint of freshness in its lingering finish. Alcohol 13.5%
