Bertani Recioto Della Valpolicella 2008
First established in 1857, today Bertani is still owned by the same family and vaunts more than a century and a half of unbroken tradition in the wines of Valpolicella. The company is based in a jaw-droppingly lovely renaissance villa and nurtures one of the largest libraries of amazing old vintages in the region, some of which can be made available on request. The Bertani company owns vineyards and cellars in the Valpantena, on the Villa Novare estate in the Valpolicella, as well as land in the Soave area and in the areas around Lake Garda. The company headquarters is in the original cellars in Grezzana, north-east of Verona, where the historic vineyards are still to be found and where the work of vinification, ageing, bottling and despatch take place. Bertani produces Recioto, a sweet red wine, with the Corvina and Rondinella grapes from the hills of the Valpantena, the same varieties used for Amarone. It is made from the smallest bunches with the best exposure to the sun, which are dried for about three months on the traditional “aréle”, or cane mats. The typical cherry bouquet is enhanced by the fact that the wine is matured in cherry-wood casks until it becomes a concentrate of wild marasca and visciola cherrries. The result is dense and velvety, but never cloying.

Really interesting Italian dessert wine. Big hit of raspberry jam on the nose and the palate along with ripe black cherry. Not overly sweet for a sweet wine but a decent amount or residual sugar to support the acidity. There's a touch of smokey chocolate on the backend that goes nicely with the medium finish.
