The 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a big, enveloping wine loaded with wild cherries, licorice, new leather and dried flowers, not to mention considerable personality. The tannins are just a touch rough around the edges, and I am not sure they will ever soften given the heat of the vintage, but the 2003 should continue to drink well for at least a handful of years. Ideally the wine is best paired with hearty dishes. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2021.

This traditional style delivers base notes of smoke and sweet earth, joined by focused flavors of dried cherry, walnut, date, star anise and a hint of rich treacle. Displays lovely balance, supple tannins and a fresh, herb- and mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2023.

The wine presents a great variety of characters, from fresh fruit to jamlike tones, which offer a very harmonious aftertaste, alternating with spicy elements. The ample nose has a sweet impact and spreads in a continuous chain of sensations.
