This traditional style delivers base notes of smoke and sweet earth, joined by focused flavors of dried cherry, walnut, date, star anise and a hint of rich treacle. Displays lovely balance, supple tannins and a fresh, herb- and mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2023.
The 2003 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a big, enveloping wine loaded with wild cherries, licorice, new leather and dried flowers, not to mention considerable personality. The tannins are just a touch rough around the edges, and I am not sure they will ever soften given the heat of the vintage, but the 2003 should continue to drink well for at least a handful of years. Ideally the wine is best paired with hearty dishes. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2021.

The wine is a deep garnet red colour. The classical cherry flavours are immediately perceptible to the nose, with the preponderant notes of marasca and plum. The wine presents a great variety of characters: dry fruit, leaf of the, liquorice and spice. The wine opens up in the mouth with all the red-berry fruits, besides vanilla in soft, heavy-duty cloth.
