Bernardus Winery Chardonnay Monterey County Ingrid's Vineyard 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

The Ingrid's vineyard is a very special vineyard. It is named after Mr. Bernardus Pon's wife, Ingrid. It is a small 10-acre vineyard that is located right in front of our Bernardus Lodge. The case production from these vines is small and is normally only available to guests of the Lodge and friends or family of Mr. Pon's. We are delighted to share with you this very exclusive single vineyard Chardonnay. The location of the vineyard is just west of Carmel Valley Village, approximately 10 miles from the ocean. This is ideal for Chardonnay as the coastal influence cools the grapes. The juice was fermented in cool cellar conditions over an 18-day period in small French oak barrels (28% of which are new), half with native yeasts and half with specially selected Burgundian yeast. We stir our barrels every two weeks throughout the nine months of barrel aging to enhance complexity and mouth-feel. Our 2003 Ingrid's Chardonnay exhibits a rich, golden hue in the glass, a result of its barrel-aging and its two years of maturing in the bottle. The honeyed aromas are classic of ripe, perfectly matured Chardonnay. Along with honey, we find ripe peach and vanilla notes and a hint of minerality typical of the Ingrid's terroir. The flavors are redolent with ripe tropical fruit flavors with substantial honey and buttery notes. The texture is very rich and full, yet balanced by a crisp acidity and a long clean finish. Cooperage: 100% barrel-fermented in 100% French oak Dargaud & Jaegle, Sirugue, Francois Freres, Cadus Appellation: Carmel Valley Varietal: 100% Chardonnay Harvest Date: September 18, 2003 Bottled: August 2004 Case Production: 409

Bernardus Winery & Vineyard:
The focus of Bernardus is to create wines that flatter the palate and stimulate the imagination. Our Marinus Estate Bordeaux-style red wine is the centerpiece of Ben Pon's dream. It is complemented by Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from cool coastal climate vineyards. We also offer limited bottlings of small production and vineyard designate wines, which are available exclusively through the tasting room and wine club...taste a dream.
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
