Bernardus Winery Chardonnay Monterey County 2012
"Our Monterey Chardonnay is assembled from specially selected growers primarily in the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands appellations. Each of these contributes unique aromas and flavors, which compliment each other to create a Chardonnay of extraordinary character and finesse. At harvest, all our grapes are hand picked after careful evaluation for ripeness. The grapes are then very gently pressed in order to obtain the highest quality juice. This is then transferred to small French oak barrels for fermentation. All barrels undergo a malo-lactic fermentation and are hand-stirred every two weeks until shortly before blending and bottling. Our Monterey Chardonnay exhibits all the characteristics that make Bernardus Chardonnay such a perennial favorite. Complex aromas of ripe apple and pear are accented by notes of vanilla and subtle toasty oak. On the palate, the texture is rich and full-bodied, exhibiting intense flavors of citrus, fig and mineral. The soft rich texture is beautifully balanced by a note of crisp acidity which is the hallmark of excellent Chardonnay from Monterey County." -Winery
The focus of Bernardus is to create wines that flatter the palate and stimulate the imagination. Our Marinus Estate Bordeaux-style red wine is the centerpiece of Ben Pon's dream. It is complemented by Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from cool coastal climate vineyards. We also offer limited bottlings of small production and vineyard designate wines, which are available exclusively through the tasting room and wine club...taste a dream.
Decent but not great. Finish less clean than expected.
I love this wine but have a lot of trouble finding it. Some days I think I taste pineapple, other days I decide it's caramel. Go figure. Either way I love, love, love it.
This is being offered at the Wine & Cheese Cellar in Tehachapi, but they are also offering the Beringer Private Reserve Chardonnay, which far overshadows this modest wine.
Four and a half glasses
I usually love Bernardus Chard - my house wine since '97 vintage. But this wine was more bitterness than I ever experienced

"The 2008 is a perfect expression of Monterey Chardonnay with bright aromas of apple
The Wine News ReviewBright yellow hue. Shy scents of peach, brown butter and dusty gravel. Rich, quite ripe, though very taut, flavors of buttery banana lime and oak spice. Very long close positively gushes with stone fruit and apple notes.Wine Enthusiast ReviewRated 90As is usually the case, Bernarduss regular Monterey Chard offers lots of bang for the buck. Dry and crisp in citrusy acids, it has complex flavors of pineapple, grapefruit, kiwi, lime and spicy coconut macaroon, with delicious oak influence.Wine Tasting NotesThe resulting wine is a perfect expression of Monterey Chardonnay, with bright citrus and tropical fruit aromas married with mineral notes and subtle toasty oak nuances. The lush, opulent palate is intense and focused with complex flavors of ripe pineapple, lime, mineral notes, and crme brulee lingering on a long, creamy finish.
