What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

The resulting wine is a perfect expression of Monterey Chardonnay, with bright citrus and tropical fruit aromas married with mineral notes and subtle toasty oak nuances. The lush, opulent palate is intense and focused with complex flavors of ripe pineapple, lime, mineral notes, and crème brulèe lingering on a long, creamy finish.

Reviews

I love this wine but have a lot of trouble finding it. Some days I think I taste pineapple, other days I decide it's caramel. Go figure. Either way I love, love, love it.

Number 24 on the Wine.com 100 of 2007! One of the best values in California Chardonnay that we've seen in a long time. Bright yellow hue. Shy scents of peach, brown butter and dusty gravel. Rich, quite ripe, though very taut, flavors of buttery banana, lime and oak spice. Very long close positively gushes with stone fruit and apple notes. -The Wine News 95 Points The beautiful weather throughout the critical months of September and October of 2005 provided us with ripe and perfectly balanced fruit. At Bernardus, all our grapes our hand picked and very gently pressed in order to retain their read more...

Bernardus “Ben” Pon founded his winery in Carmel Valley in 1990. But his location, while excellent for red Bordeaux varieties, is really too warm for high-quality Chardonnay. So the grapes for this wine are sourced from cooler parts of Monterey County, including the Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco AVAs. (The blend also contains a small amount of fruit from Carneros.) The wine was made by Dean De Korth, who has a lot of experience with Chardonnay, having worked in Burgundy and at Morgan Winery and Talbott Vineyards in Monterey. Ninety percent of the blend was barrel-fermented in French read more...
