Bernard Moreau Chassagne Montrachet 2015

External Review:

Finding a great entry-level Burgundy can be a difficult and frustrating endeavor with many such wines coming across as excessively hard thin or simple. That’s why I was so delighted by this offering from Domaine Moreau. The initial aromas of cherry pie and strawberry show wonderful purity and depth and are soon spiced up by notes of anise caraway and lemon zest. As this opens up further a wonderful crushed-rock minerality and beef broth-like savory quality come to the fore. Ripe Bing cherries repeat through the elegant but lengthy finish. With its relatively low alcohol and low tannin this could make an excellent summertime sipper but it’s equally worthy of being decanted and enjoyed with a serious meal such as coq au vin.

From Chassagne vines and 100% barrel aged in 4 to 5 year old oak. A ripe but fresh and very pinot nose has added breadth due to pepper and warm earth nuances where the latter element continues onto the delicious and solidly persistent finish that is only mildly rustic. This should drink well young.

Moreau’s Pinot Noir vines average 25 years of age. They are planted on an east-facing lieu dit in the village of Mancey known as “Les Cras.” This name, which occurs in several other spots in Burgundy, denotes a vineyard with thin and stony limestone soil. This structured Pinot Noir is full of dark fruits, solid minerals and rustic berries.

Limestone-y soil gives this charming Chassagne-Montrachet its clean and focused minerality. Orchard fruits and steal interplay to make this pure elegance in a glass.
