Food Pairings for Bernard Burgaud Côte-Rôtie
Deep ripe fresh black fruit aromas. Very fresh nose, spiced but quite mellow. The palate is quite tannic, flavors of black licorice, oak and leather -- a classic Rhone Syrah but very clean even given the heavy tannins, they drop off the midpalate quickly revealing a more accessible black fruit wash. Huge oak, leather puckering Syrah. This wine begs for a meal.

Burgaud is a traditionalist who insists on making a long-lived Cote Rotie of pure Syrah (no Viognier) blended from his parcels in six of the appellation's names sites(climats). The grapes, which are picked over several weeks to insure perfect maturity, are entirely destemmed and fermented for up to two weeks, with punching down(pigeage). Aging is for 15 months in small Burgundian barrels, of which one-fifth are renewed each year. The 2005 is a great vintage, with 10 to 15 years of cellaring potential, but can be drunk young if decanted.
