Wine Advocate ReviewRated 90This single-vineyard bottling shows mocha-infused white chocolate, black cherry, and currant fruit with a hint of minerality and underbrush. Deep, full-bodied, rather rich, but overlaid by some serious structure and tannin, this is a relatively big styled Merlot that should age handsomely for 12 or more years.Wine Tasting NotesAfter 24 months, Cabernet-like tannins in the Howell Mountain Merlot had enough time to soften, and that clove, cinnamon stick, and sweet spice aromas and flavors from the barrels had integrated well with the sweet black plum, blackberry, light orange rind, cocoa and minty characteristics from the grapes. Ed also chose to add almost 4 percent Cabernet Franc to the blend to bring a black cherry accent to the nose and elongate the finish.
To achieve the perfect color in their White Merlot, Beringer’s winemaking team gently destems and presses the Merlot grapes, leaving the red skins in contact with the juice for approximately three hours. As soon as the desired soft, red-purple hue is achieved, the juice is removed. Slow, cool fermentations follow to retain the bright acidity, fresh melon and citrus flavors. The resulting wine is a vibrant blend of fresh berry and zesty orange peel flavors, with a hint of nutmeg spice.
