89 points Robert Parker: A sleeper of the vintage as well as a stunning value, the 2008 Chardonnay Napa ranks alongside some of the great bargains in California Chardonnay such as Kendall-Jackson's Vintner's Reserve. Orange blossom, lemon oil, peach, and pineapple notes are restrained, but noticeable in this medium-bodied, fruit-driven effort. A subtle note of oak provides structure and delineation. Never a shrinking violet, Beringer's Private Reserve Chardonnay is once again a rich, fully expressed big-bodied offering with early smells of honey and ripe apples and underlying suggestions of pastry crust, Meyer lemons and sweet cream. Somewhat soft at entry and viscous to the point of being just a bit heavy, this one never lacks for personality, and while it could use a touch more acidity to go with many dishes, it has all the depth and range to accompany blackened salmon or a lightly curried seafood stew. Nicely crafted, medium-full-bodied, balanced and mannerly, this wine features ripe apple fruitiness as its central theme from first sniff through to mid-volume finish. It starts out as a touch round on the palate and then finds plenty of firming in the latter going, and, if it is somewhat direct in style with modest touches of the complexity that might adorn pricier bottlings, it is not without those as well. As opulent as they come. Oozes over the palatehellip; Tropical-fruit flavors; creamy custardy texture.
Has an especially ripe and creamy mouthfeel with complex layers of pineapple, apple, pear and citrus flavors and hints of toasted almond, vanilla and nutmeg spice.
Tart apple and honeyed apricot flavors combine the firm with the luscious. Itrsquo;s a gentle, warm, minerally chardonnay to serve with any roast white meats, particularly pork stuffed with fruit.
A junior version of the Private Reserve with many of the same qualities of opulently ripe tropical fruit, lavish oak and toast, and a rich, creamy texture. Of course, itrsquo;s not as massive as the PR, but is nonetheless a good wine.
Flowers and oak spices on the nose. Rounder than the Stanly Ranch bottling but less precise, with more wood influence showing. Finishes with modest persistence. Most of the barrel-fermented portion of this wine (53%) went through malolactic fermentation.
