Beringer Private Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

When all of these cuvees are blended together, the result is the finest Cabernet Sauvignon yet made by Ed Sbragia, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve (11,000 cases of truly divine Cabernet nectar). For statisticians, 44% came from the Steinhauer Vineyard, 1% from Bancroft Ranch, 17% from Rancho del Oso, 3% from Chabot, 13% from St. Helena Home Ranch, 0% from Quarry Vineyard, and the balance from Marston Vineyard. As I reported last year, the 2001 is an extraordinary effort. Large-scaled yet elegant, it boasts classic notes of creme de cassis, chocolate, and smoky oak. With extraordinary voluptuousness, great concentration, tremendous intensity, and a finish that lasts nearly 60 seconds, this saturated purple-colored, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the greatest wines ever made at Beringer. It is a tribute to the brilliant Ed Sbragia. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2023.

It is impossible to take Beringer’s long history lightly. With their 215 acre plot of land purchased in 1875 and the winery founded in 1876, Jacob and Frederick Beringer’s winery is the oldest continually operating winery in Napa Valley. In 2001, it was named a historic district in the National Register for Historic Places. Current winemaker Laurie Hook and winemaster Ed Sbragia continue to draw from over a dozen vineyards to create world-class wines from varying soil compositions and climates. The winery managed to survive, and even thrive, during Prohibition by selling sacramental wines with a federal license. Since the wine was being made for religious purposes, it was legal! A unique aspect of Beringer is the tunnel system that was carved into the side of Spring Mountain around 1880. Chinese immigrant workers, the same workers that helped build the Trans-Continental Railroad, spent years hand-chiseling the 1,200 feet of tunnels. To this day, the tunnels act as a natural insulator, keeping the temperature between 58 and 60 degrees year-round, ideal for storing wine. Read less

Deep, rich nose of creme de cassis, alcohol remains strong and concentrated dark fruit. Deep maroon in the glass. Highly concentrated and bold. Densely flavored and mouth coating with rich elegant fruit and balance. A nice slight vanilla tone on the finish. Also hints of violets. Delicious! Optimal growing conditions indeed!! - Tasted at Beringer Private Reserve Tasting at the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas 4/5/10

A massive youngster, with a fine structure and firm, chewy tannins. Dense and concentrated, only offering glimpses of what lies ahead. Shows dried currant, herb, sage and wild berry flavors. The spectacular 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve came in at 14.2% natural alcohol. The good news is that winemaker Ed Sbragia produced 10 000 cases of this beauty. Just hitting late adolescence this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee exhibits an opaque dark purple color along with a beautiful smoky sweet black currant licorice truffle toast and underbrush-scented nose. With fabulous concentration great intensity and tremendous purity this voluptuously textured full-bodied classic is o

Good full ruby. Complex very ripe aromas of cassis minerals lead pencil and currant leaf. Large-scaled and sweet with flavors of roasted currant blackberry and dark chocolate. This is almost too big for the mouth. A California cabernet with superb density and length... Stephen Tanzers IWC.
