It is impossible to take Beringer’s long history lightly. With their 215 acre plot of land purchased in 1875 and the winery founded in 1876, Jacob and Frederick Beringer’s winery is the oldest continually operating winery in Napa Valley. In 2001, it was named a historic district in the National Register for Historic Places. Current winemaker Laurie Hook and winemaster Ed Sbragia continue to draw from over a dozen vineyards to create world-class wines from varying soil compositions and climates. The winery managed to survive, and even thrive, during Prohibition by selling sacramental wines with a federal license. Since the wine was being made for religious purposes, it was legal! A unique aspect of Beringer is the tunnel system that was carved into the side of Spring Mountain around 1880. Chinese immigrant workers, the same workers that helped build the Trans-Continental Railroad, spent years hand-chiseling the 1,200 feet of tunnels. To this day, the tunnels act as a natural insulator, keeping the temperature between 58 and 60 degrees year-round, ideal for storing wine. Read less

Stony on the nose, with a hint of dry stem notes topped with cider apple and pear peel aromas. Linear on the palate, though this does shows some richness in the mouth with early lemon flavors followed by a nice touch of stony astringency, as well with a hint of peach. This is moderately big with a fruit-driven finish that shows off lovely lemon and almost under-ripe pineapple. Dry and deep, this shows lovely richness wrapped around a fine acidic spine. 88 points

Almond nougat and dried orange peel aromas greet the nose followed by rich, smoky honeycomb notes and the spice of toasty oak. There’s a pop of tangerine on entry and this is downright flannelly on the palate, showing tremendous richness and creamy, honeyed pineapple and guava flavors on the short finish. A bit of a powerhouse, but this is more dense than huge. A bit soft for me, nonetheless well made in its style. 91 points

The growing season began with a slightly delayed budbreak after quite a bit of Winter and Spring rain. Summer was moderately warm, with the exception of a slightly hotter July that helped speed the growth of the vines. Mild weather continued through much of harvest, allowing for consistent and deliberate ripening of the grapes. Harvest was excellent overall and provided grapes of great quantity and quality.

Beringer Founders Estate Chardonnay is the perfect combination of pear, apple and ripe tropical fruit flavors, with a hint of citrus and a classically round mouthfeel.

Ripe, with fine intensity to the green pear, vanilla and eucalyptus flavors. Bright lemon-lime tones linger on the tart, slightly cedary finish.

Flavors of ripe citrus and apple are accented by aromas of toffee, tangerines and orange blossom. The mouth-coating, round texture highlights the rich flavors, all balanced by bright, refreshing notes that linger into the finish.

Jacob and Frederick Beringer founded Beringer Vineyards in the year 1870 in the heart of the Napa Valley. The winery houses it's wines in historic tunnels, hand chiseled over many years.

An elegant style, this is sleek in body and rich and layered in flavor, with a subtle display of ripe spice, baked apple, citrus, pear and honeysuckle flavors. Ends with a tapered finish that shows fine toasty oak. Drink now through 2018.
