What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

Beringer's Chardonnay vineyards span several sub-appellations in southern Napa Valley, where fog from the San Pablo Bay works its way north each afternoon during the growing season, cooling the vineyards and allowing a longer maturation period. The cooler vineyards to the south produce grapes with crisp apple, pear and citrus characteristics, while vineyards closer to Yountville yield Chardonnay with a rich texture, and tropical fruit and pineapple aromas and flavors. Each lot was kept separate and used several different techniques. After the grapes were gently destemmed and read more...crushed, slightly more than half of the juice was fermented and aged for 10 months in French oak barrels to enhance its natural richness and roundness, and battonage was significantly limited so aroma and flavor components from the oak and yeast lees would not be overpowering. The remaining juice was stainless steel fermented to retain more of the pure fruit character. Additionally, to maintain a balancing crispness in the wine, only a third of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. Lemon zest, green apple and spice aromas lead into mouthcoating citrus, toasted coconut, nutmeg, cardamom and apple flavors and a bright fruit finish.
