Beringer Meritage Knights Valley 2009

What a pleasant surprise from a winery I pretty much have learned to dismiss. What I don't like about Beringer is the amount of production they release! They scare me when their wines are available from Rite Aid to your local "booze hound" liquor store. However, getting over my historical bias and historical affinity for White Zinfandel, I have to say these new KV wines are pretty impressive! The Meritage was rich, vibrant and flavorful. Even so, it retained a good amount of structure to stay food friendly and keep a nice balance between being too fruit forward yet retaining some tannin and acid to keep the wine honest. The label says cocoa and smoky oak, but I would have to say there's more cocoa than oak but the wine does have all five bordeaux varietals which makes it even more appealing! Cheers to Beringer and their fine release of a classically styled wine and a winner winner chicken dinner. Probably more with rib-eye truth be told :)

Lots of dust so good thing I decanted, fruit bomb during decanting; medium red and clear; big expansive berry and bushy herbal nose, delightful in mouth and adds tartness and cherry moving into darker berries and ever so slight raison; really fresh considering it is 19 yrs old and so inexpensive - JCW, July 2011.
