Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2012 Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of ripe blueberry, blackberry, maple and nutmeg. Notes of currants, sassafras, and bright red fruits emerge from a dense core of fruit, accented by juicy acidity and a pretty finish. Located 17 miles northwest of the winery, Knights Valley vineyard is approximately 600 acres, and has rocky, well-drained soils that are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. To maintain the unique characteristics of the different lots from varying areas of the vineyard, Chief Winemaker Laurie Hook monitored each of the lots carefully through vinification and aging. Extended maceration created larger tannins to enhance the lush mouthfeel of the blend and extracted a maximum of color, aromas and flavors. The wines were then aged in small French Nevers oak barrels (28% new) for thirteen months and underwent malolactic fermentation for further development of texture and mouthfeel." -Winery

It is impossible to take Beringer’s long history lightly. With their 215 acre plot of land purchased in 1875 and the winery founded in 1876, Jacob and Frederick Beringer’s winery is the oldest continually operating winery in Napa Valley. In 2001, it was named a historic district in the National Register for Historic Places. Current winemaker Laurie Hook and winemaster Ed Sbragia continue to draw from over a dozen vineyards to create world-class wines from varying soil compositions and climates. The winery managed to survive, and even thrive, during Prohibition by selling sacramental wines with a federal license. Since the wine was being made for religious purposes, it was legal! A unique aspect of Beringer is the tunnel system that was carved into the side of Spring Mountain around 1880. Chinese immigrant workers, the same workers that helped build the Trans-Continental Railroad, spent years hand-chiseling the 1,200 feet of tunnels. To this day, the tunnels act as a natural insulator, keeping the temperature between 58 and 60 degrees year-round, ideal for storing wine. Read less

Dark fruit accented with lightly stemmy olive notes greets the nose, followed by a smoky top note over a nice base note of sweet bramble and blackberry fruit with slightly leathery accents. This is silky with slightly chalky tannins that offer nice cut on the palate. There’s a lot of fruit here, pretty purplish fruit with nice cranberry edges that leads to deep blackcurrant and blackberry flavors that are nicely bright on the palate and framed with spice and mocha accents. With time, this turns fairly tannic, very clean and fresh, with a moderately long finish that turns a touch pasty on the finale with just a little wood tannins sticking out. Medium full-bodied and smooth yet faceted, this is a safe bet to please a lot of people. 90 points

Kind of a "yeasty"/herbal nose. Maybe, even, some mint. Quite straightforward on the front of the palate. Medium-to-full bodied. Cassis/blueberry fruit. Tannins kind of sneak up on you--at first you don't notice them. Then, oh yeah, there they are. I like the tannin, and while I don't think this will age to a great wine, it could be laid down for a couple years. US$18.99 at Costco in Chino Hills

Decent middle of the road chardonnary. Not a lot of anything in particular with this one, subtle oak, some good light citrus, but nothing to brag about.

This is a very smooth berry flavor Cabernet with flavors of vanilla, caramel and a bit of spice. Tannins are medium and the finish is wonderful.

Expressive nose of currant, cassis and some green notes along with hints of plum and pepper. Aromas also of grilled herbs, asphalt and savory notes. Energetic and vibrant on the palate with a nice, rich feel. Elegant structure with nice balance. Good integration of wood with the currant, cassis and vanilla flavors. Light hint of eucalyptus. Nice! 92 pts. 4/20/13

The 2008 Knights Valley Cabernet is a wine with some bite to it. Medium to slightly heavier in structure. Very fruit forward on the nose....Almost reminds me of the bouquet of an Oberon 2005 Merlot. Very nice! Cheers!

The 2012 Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of dark blue fruits and spices. Notes of cassis, sweet licorice and a juicy core of fruit are balanced by nice acidity and a silky, lingering finish. To maintain the unique characteristics of the different lots from varying areas of the vineyard, Chief Winemaker Laurie Hook monitored each of the lots through vinification and aging. The wines were then aged in a combination of seasoned oak barrels with a small amount of new oak for 17 months to both round and soften the tannins and bring in some additional spice notes. The foundation of the Waymaker is Syrah, a varietal that demonstrates great richness and generosity from Camatta Hills. Cabernet Sauvignon comprises the majority of the balance of the blend, and lends great depth of fruit as well as lifted spice notes. Laurie blended in a portion of Petite Sirah for its aromatics and rich, inky color. - Winery

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Knight’s Valley reveals a vegetal character that keeps my score from going higher. Medium-bodied with Asian plum sauce, black currants, cherries and loamy soil undertones, it is adequate, but uninspiring, no doubt because of the vintage.

Well-proportioned, this shows an edge of dried earth, herb and leather, with a vanilla bean accent to the dried berry notes. Very complete, but needs time. Drink now through 2022.

The Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of clove, allspice, lavender, and cocoa. Juicy flavors of blackberry, sweet tobacco, and pink pepper are accented by fine, approachable tannins, nice body and a rich finish.

Knights Valley is a very special place for us at Beringer. As you drive over the mountain from St.Helena, the valley opens up before your eyes and you immediately feel transported to another time, where things are slower and more rustic. I always hope to do justice to the vineyard with this wine and I believe this has done so - it delivers great complexity and depth while still retaining a rough-hewn charm. It has a nice acidity, rich tannins, and a solid concentration of fruit.

Trim band of currant, berry and dusty herbal notes, finishing with grape jelly flavors.
