Beringer Founders' Estate Merlot 2015

Member Review by westcoastdeedee7:

This is my go-to merlot. No other merlot compares. It's amazing that it is so affordable. I always have a few bottles of the red merlot on hand.

It is impossible to take Beringer’s long history lightly. With their 215 acre plot of land purchased in 1875 and the winery founded in 1876, Jacob and Frederick Beringer’s winery is the oldest continually operating winery in Napa Valley. In 2001, it was named a historic district in the National Register for Historic Places. Current winemaker Laurie Hook and winemaster Ed Sbragia continue to draw from over a dozen vineyards to create world-class wines from varying soil compositions and climates. The winery managed to survive, and even thrive, during Prohibition by selling sacramental wines with a federal license. Since the wine was being made for religious purposes, it was legal! A unique aspect of Beringer is the tunnel system that was carved into the side of Spring Mountain around 1880. Chinese immigrant workers, the same workers that helped build the Trans-Continental Railroad, spent years hand-chiseling the 1,200 feet of tunnels. To this day, the tunnels act as a natural insulator, keeping the temperature between 58 and 60 degrees year-round, ideal for storing wine. Read less

This wine has a great flavor like cherry and smooth, this is more for a person that enjoys not too dry wines like a Pinot or a Malbec but that's a whole other genre of wines. Very Colorfull with a deep red in tone. It is a little oily not too much ( I personally like this) More flavor a not too much alcohol taste like. I only had one in hand the we opened I wish I had at leat two more of the same for my gests.

This a semi-sweet wine with a dry feel (paradoxical, I know). Fruity flavor, you can taste the grape. I usually drink only very dry wines (Chardonnay, Red Zin, Merlot, Chianti). Not much on the sweeter ones. The wife bought it because it was on sale. This wine is very pleasant to the palate. I do recommend it : ) Oh, and this is the 2009 white merlot I've got, not the '08.

The wine was good but didn't seem very complex to me. got a slight floral sent upon opening but not much else. as for the taste it had hints of strawberry, orange and what i can only describe as cranberry's. I did like the acidity that the wine had as it gave a nice little tingle. In the end its a nice simple wine for about $5 that you could bring to the family get together or a summer BBQ. I would also recommend it to someone who doesn't like the darker wines.

The Beringer Founders' Estate Merlot is approachable and delicious. Hints of plum and brown spice on the nose compliment the boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry finish on the palate. It's well-balanced, soft tannins make this wine a perfect accompaniment to a variety of foods, such as grilled meats or hearty vegetable dishes. - Winery

Beringer’s Napa Valley Merlot is a vibrant expression of this beautiful varietal and the depth and complexity of flavor it can exhibit when grown in the right place. Winemaker Laurie Hook selects vineyards and blocks from AVAs up and down the valley to craft a wine that is the quintessential expression of Napa Valley terroir. TASTING NOTES: The 2013 Merlot has lush red and blue fruits highlighted by hints of toffee, dark cherry and chocolate mint. This fleshy wine offers dark plum, black currant and mocha notes accented by fine tannins. VINTAGE & VINEYARDS: The 2013 vintage began with a warm, dry spring and relatively early bud break. Summer was notably consistent with even, warm temperatures throughout. Harvest began quite early in August, and by September the majority of whites and lighter reds were completely off the vines. The cooler, sunny weather throughout October allowed grapes still on the vine to develop more phenolic and flavor maturity levels. Overall, it was a high quality crop that was above average in quantity. The majority of this wine was made from grapes grown on Beringer’s Big Ranch Vineyard in Oak Knoll, a relatively cool vineyard which produces Merlot of exceptional character and quality. Laurie also chose lots from several other vineyards, including and Gamble Ranch in Oakville and Bancroft Ranch, one of our reserve vineyards in the Howell Mountain AVA. The grapes for the 2013 Napa Valley Merlot were harvested between September 14th and October 5th. WINEMAKING: Kept in separate small lots until the final blending, the grapes for our Merlot were picked, quickly brought to the winery and placed in small stainless steel tanks for a 2-day cold soak designed to extract color and flavor from the grapes. The juice was then fermented dry and the young wine was placed in small French oak barrels (17% new) for 14 months.

Enormously concentrated, smelling of smoke and coffee and tasting of chocolate and black cherry. An extreme wine that swings for the fences. A long, toasty finish brings the oak flavors back for an encore. Tannic and young enough to start drinking in... Wine Spectator. A Merlot wine from California in USA. 1989 Beringer Merlot Bancroft Ranch 750ml

The 2011 Merlot has a remarkable concentration of fruit with generous notes of black cherry and dark plum throughout. Finely grained tannins and a nice texture give this Merlot a distinct level of complexity while still being very approachable from the start. - Winery ** Only 4 in Stock **

Beringer Napa Valley Merlot is a quintessential expression of this beautiful varietal and the depth of flavors it can exhibit. This is an aromatic, inviting wine from the start. This wine is brimming with plum, blackberry and sweet vanilla aromas. The flavors are equally rich black cherry, bittersweet chocolate and a hint of smoke. The tannins are dense, and the finish is supple despite the heft and complexity of the wine overall.
