Beringer Chardonnay Luminus 2012
The 2012 Luminus has a striking purity of fruit, and showcases bright citrus characteristics and a beautiful minerality. It has a robust acidity, notes of lemon pith, almond extract, and a silky, elegant texture. Meaning "light" in Latin, Luminus naturally represents the radiance of this Chardonnay. Laurie has always admired the Chardonnay from our Big Ranch Vineyard for its elegance and balance, and the 2012 vintage marks the debut of this distinctive wine.

Bright medium yellow. Pungent aromas and flavors of citrus fruits, minerals and smoky, vanillin oak. Nicely concentrated and tactile, showing an almost glyceral mid-palate impression but a distinct firmness on the back end from the oak (and the remaining malic acidity). This dry, persistent wine finishes with resounding notes of pineapple and lemon. No hurry to drink this.
Clean and crisp, this wine has the roundness of oak without being dominated by its sweetness or vanillin. Instead, it’s clean, with baked green apple flavors and touches of corn silk. A firm, savory white for roast sea bass with corn salsa.
A 100% barrel-fermented, relatively new offering is the 2012 Chardonnay Luminus, which is made from Dijon clones from the Oak Knoll appellation. A brilliant example of Chardonnay, it comes across as a first-growth Chassagne-Montrachet or Meursault. Aromas of honeysuckle, hazelnut and buttered citrus are followed by a medium-bodied white with admirable fruit intensity, decent acidity and nicely integrated wood. This cuvee is put through partial rather than full malolactic, and that appears to preserve a lot of vibrancy and freshness.
This elegant, balanced Chardonnay reflects the unique terroir of the Oak Knoll district, located in the cool southern region of Napa Valley, and is noted by its distinct focus and bright straw color. The seductive nose leaps from the glass, delivering buttery, smoke-tinged stone fruit, citrus, pear, a thread of minerality, and spiced oak. Full in the mouth and palate coating.
