It is impossible to take Beringer’s long history lightly. With their 215 acre plot of land purchased in 1875 and the winery founded in 1876, Jacob and Frederick Beringer’s winery is the oldest continually operating winery in Napa Valley. In 2001, it was named a historic district in the National Register for Historic Places. Current winemaker Laurie Hook and winemaster Ed Sbragia continue to draw from over a dozen vineyards to create world-class wines from varying soil compositions and climates. The winery managed to survive, and even thrive, during Prohibition by selling sacramental wines with a federal license. Since the wine was being made for religious purposes, it was legal! A unique aspect of Beringer is the tunnel system that was carved into the side of Spring Mountain around 1880. Chinese immigrant workers, the same workers that helped build the Trans-Continental Railroad, spent years hand-chiseling the 1,200 feet of tunnels. To this day, the tunnels act as a natural insulator, keeping the temperature between 58 and 60 degrees year-round, ideal for storing wine. Read less

Elegant and complex, one of the BEST of the vintages of Private Reserves from Beringer. A great full mouth of dark fruit with a long well structured finish.

I have enjoyed many vintages of Beringer Reserve Cab and this is very typical of previous vintages. It is an elegant wine - somewhat more like a super-second bordeaux than a top-notch California cab. What always strikes me is the velvety mouth-feel and combination of red and dark berry flavors -- usually with a hint of vanilla. It needs more time in the bottle as it remains tightly wound as of 1/08.

We enjoyed this vintage Before a meal and were very happily surprised. It certainly has a multi-layered complexity with aromas of smokey oak, sage, and blackberry (of course-it's from Napa) and a lingering finish with hints of spicy currant and herbaceous minerality. Remember, the best place to enjoy a good paring is on a train-food just tastes better!

Deep, rich nose of creme de cassis, alcohol remains strong and concentrated dark fruit. Deep maroon in the glass. Highly concentrated and bold. Densely flavored and mouth coating with rich elegant fruit and balance. A nice slight vanilla tone on the finish. Also hints of violets. Delicious! Optimal growing conditions indeed!! - Tasted at Beringer Private Reserve Tasting at the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas 4/5/10

Beringer's Private Reserve Cabernet is always one of Napa Valley's best because Beringer has access to such a wide array of prime vineyard sites throughout the Valley. Grapes are sourced from Howell Mountain, St. Helena, Rutherford, Spring Mountain and Mount Veeder. 96% Cabernet Sauvignon3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine aged for 20 months in new French Nevers oak barrels (84% new) and the 12 months in the bottle. 2013 was a legendary vintage in Napa Valley and this wine shows it. Antonio Galloni scored this 95 points saying "A big, dense wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is solid. Much fresher and more delineated than the single-vineyard wines, the 2013 captures the freshness and overall intensity of the year. Graphite, smoke, inky blue/purplish fruit, wild flowers and lavender meld together to form an attractive mélange of aromas and flavors." and Robert Parker scored it 97 points and said "One of the great efforts of recent years, and not surprisingly so, is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve. The wine could benefit from 7-10 years cellaring and probably last 30 to 40. When all is said and done, this is an instant classic, the wine full-bodied with oodles of crème de cassis, pen ink, graphite and baking spices. It is multi-dimensional, layered, and one of the all-time great Beringer Private Reserves – and there have been many." Limited!!

VINTAGE & VINEYARDS: The 2013 vintage began with a warm, dry spring and relatively early bud break. Summer was notably consistent with even, warm temperatures throughout. Harvest began quite early in August, and by September the majority of whites and lighter reds were completely off the vines. Cool yet sunny weather in October allowed the final grapes on the vine to linger and develop great phenolic and flavor maturities while maintaining steady sugar levels. Overall, it was a high quality crop that was above average in quantity. Steinhauer vineyard provides the foundation (45%) for the 2013 blend, which has been part of the Private Reserve blend since 1993. A significant portion (22%) comes from Bancroft Ranch atop Howell Mountain as well, and another portion (6%) comes from the St. Helena Home vineyard, which was part of the original acreage that founders Jacob and Frederick Beringer purchased in 1875 with the Beringer estate. Each lot is closely watched during the ripening period to determine ideal pick time. Grapes for the 2013 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested between September 25th and October 22nd. WINEMAKING: The Beringer reserve vineyards offer Cabernet Sauvignon of such quality that a minimalist approach to winemaking has long defined this special blend. Each vineyard is vinified separately and monitored carefully from the moment the fruit comes into the winery at Harvest. Tailored pump-over techniques are used for optimal extraction, and the wine is aged in hand-selected, custom-toasted barrels of new French Nevers oak (84% new). Each lot was aged for 20 months before selection of the final blend, to allow each vineyard to express the depth of its unique terroir. TASTING NOTES: The 2013 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is an exceptional expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the best vintages in years. The enticing aromas of ripe blackberry, boysenberry, fresh tobacco, brown spice and sweet mint are profound in the glass. Dense and well-structured, its supple tannins are complemented by notes of espresso, mocha and balanced with a silky and elegant finish. Blend: 96% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Cabernet Franc 1% Petit Verdot VINIFICATION: Vineyard lots harvested and vinified separately . Aged 20 months in new French Nevers oak (84% new), 12 months in bottle SOURCING: 81% Howell Mountain 11% St. Helena 4% Calistoga 4% Mount Veeder Alc: 15.2% TA: 5.8 g/L pH: 3.92

Robert Parker scored it 96 points saying "Revealing the great blending skills of Beringer’s winemaking team, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a winner. Having purchased Private Reserves for many years, I can attest that they age incredibly well. The 1991, one of the great successes of that vintage, is still aging beautifully at nearly 25 years of age. The sensational 2012 (10,000 cases) boasts an opaque purple color along with abundant aromas of charcoal, burning embers, creme de cassis, chocolate, blackberries and licorice. The long, complex, compelling, full-bodied texture along with terrific purity and a savory, rich mouthfeel result in a classic, quintessential Napa Cabernet Sauvignon to drink now and over the next 20-25 years."

Winemaker Notes: The 2012 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has complex layers of black fruit and notes of cocoa powder, graphite and light smoky oak. Notes of bittersweet chocolate and blackberry pastry complement. The 2012 vintage began with textbook conditions that continued through much of Harvest. Spring bud break was ideal with steady flowering and even fruit set. A lengthy stretch of warm days and cool nights during the summer months allowed for optimal ripeness to develop in the grapes and an exceptional quality overall. Steinhauer vineyard provides the foundation (30%) for the 2012 blend, which has been part of the Private Reserve blend since 1993. A significant portion (17%) comes from Bancroft Ranch atop Howell Mountain as well, and another portion (17%) comes from the St. Helena Home vineyard, which was part of the original acreage that founders Jacob and Frederick Beringer purchased in 1875 with the Beringer estate. Laurie also chose some select lots from the Rutherford appellation to include in the 2012 blend, as she particularly liked the broad, dense and classic Cabernet characteristics that appellation is known for. Each lot is closely watched during the ripening period to determine ideal pick time. Grapes for the 2012 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested between September 25th and October 27th.

(includes 2.5% petit verdot): Good full ruby. Pure but tight nose shows a medicinal reserve. Then tight and penetrating in the mouth, with noteworthy intensity to the blackberry and menthol flavors. Much less open and showy today than the Bancroft cabernet, revealing little in the way of easy sweetness. This seriously structured wine finishes with substantial firm tannins, excellent breadth and a suggestion of chocolatey richness, and should be long-lived. "A blend of the best of the best," according to winemaker Laurie Hook, who added that shes looking for "intensity, complexity, depth, persistence, elegance." - Stephen Tanzer 93+ Points The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is a beautifully balanced wine. Firm yet well-integrated tannins frame a core of dark red berries, flowers, mint, spices and licorice. The Reserve shows lovely inner perfume and mid-palate juiciness. It should drink well with a minimum of cellaring. The main vineyar...
